3 star hotels are classified as 'standard' and 'comfort' properties in Europe. Though the specifics vary from country to country, they're usually simply furnished, comfortable lodgings with food provided on a B&B or Half Board basis. The Self-Catered apartments that fall under these ratings are generally mid-range – not the most luxurious in the mountains, but not rabbit hutch tiddlers either.

There isn't an official rating system for chalets; if a chalet's listed with 3 stars it's likely to be comfy and sociable – no frills but perfectly fine for putting your feet up at the end of the day, with a chalet host taking care of all the housework. In the location department, many of our 3 star properties are first class: With doorstep skiing, a few minutes' walk to the lifts, or slap bang in the centre of resort.
