It doesn’t take long to find a high-end hotel in the Swiss Alps – these grand Belle Epoque palaces saw the start of winter tourism, welcomed stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age and have set the bar for ski accommodation worldwide ever since.
More recently, marvellous modern designs have joined the scene – built with glass for incredible views of those dramatic peaks and kitted out with monumental staircases, private saunas, rotating beds, you name it.
With highly praised chefs at the helm you can dine like a king; morning, noon and night in Switzerland’s best hotels for foodies. Zermatt is the king of the gourmet scene in the Alps, with oodles of fine dining eateries to book a table at, hosted in grand dining rooms with the likes of cigar rooms and piano bars to retire to later on. Restaurant Corbeau d’Or at the Mirabeau had sixteen Gault&Millau points last time we checked, while head chef Heinz Rufibach at the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof had earned a very respectable fourteen.
If the clear-as-can-be air and sweeping mountain views weren’t healing enough, Switzerland’s spa hotels come with every facility and treatment you could dream of – covering thousands of square metres with saunas in every form, salt water grottos, thermal pools, you name it. Arosa has some spectacular lodgings in this department, like the Waldhotel National which has not one but TWO wellness areas.
