Ask any hotelier the three most important things about their hotel and their answer will always be “Location, Location, Location!” And you really could not ask for a better spot than that offered by our Chalet Hotel de Champoluc. It’s set at the skiers’ end of the village centre, in a perfect, virtually ski-in/ski-out location at the foot of the home-run piste, and right next door to the main Crest gondola and ski-hire shop.

The hotel’s wood-panelling gives the lounge, bar and dining-room a lovely traditional and welcoming Alpine atmosphere - the ideal setting in which to relax after skiing over afternoon tea. The en suite bedrooms are spacious and comfortable with Sky TV, many with extra beds available for families, and most have a balcony or terrace. For beginners, Antagnod is a great starting point. A short bus journey outside the main town, it has a magic carpet and two chair lifts serving three blue slopes, one red and a short black. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the hotel. Location wise, you can’t beat it – it’s absolutely superb, literally right next to the lift. The hotel itself is absolutely fine and typically Italian. The staff were excellent and hotel manager superb. The food was really amazing, I loved it! But dinner was served far too late. We didn’t get called until eight o’clock at night, and the main course wasn’t served until nine. It was like a wedding dinner, there were so many people there and they were really catering en masse, so you had to wait for other people to finish before you were served. We didn’t want to spend another week waiting for dinner so ended up cutting our two week trip short. If they’d served it earlier (and snow conditions weren’t so scratchy) we probably would have stayed.
