Ski holidays in resorts near Innsbruck airport. Chalets, hotels and apartments.
Innsbruck Airport (INN) is the largest international airport in the Tirol region of western Austria. The airport operates all year round handling regional flights in the Alps and seasonal international traffic. There are hundreds of ski resorts within a few hours of Innsbruck, including some of the finest resorts in Europe - Lech, Mayrhofen, Obergurgl, St Anton and Sölden. Regular shuttles and good transport links ensure a quick onward trip to your ski destination. Many airlines fly into Innsbruck, including British Airways, EasyJet, Jet2 and TUI.
The airport opened in 1925 with the first scheduled flight operations from Munich to Innsbruck. In the following years, more airlines were integrated, including Swissair with services to Zurich. After expanding the airport during the 1960s, there was a boom in chartered flight operations in the late 1970s. During the 1990s a new tower, freight terminal and arrival hall was built, and improvements continued into the 2000s. Now, Innsbruck welcomes over 1 million passengers a year.
Innsbruck Airport is on the outskirts of Innsbruck city in western Austria. You can reach the city centre and train station by bus in under 20 minutes. Bus route F runs every 15 minutes during the day between the airport terminal and Innsbruck main station (Hauptbahnhof). Skiers travelling to their destination by coach transfer will be pleased to know that the airport is next to the motorway and most ski resorts are just 1-1 and a half hours away.
There is only one small terminal at Innsbruck Airport. The airport set-up is like Chambery and Grenoble - basic facilities and potentially long waiting times if there are delays, or multiple flights are departing or arriving. But what the airport lacks in amenities it makes up for in convenience and stunning mountain views. Improvements have been made in recent years to improve the flow of passengers around the airport.
Innsbruck Airport is a category C airport requiring pilots to have special training due to the unique difficulties flying in the mountains and close to the city. Generally, flights are on time but, as you would expect, adverse weather conditions can cause delays.
Passengers have access to limited services at Innsbruck Airport. Several eateries and shops can be found in the main airport hall. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport. Disabled facilities are available throughout the airport – designated parking, special lifts and toilets. For medical assistance or queries, visit the main information desk located in the middle of the terminal.
Shopping options are limited at Innsbruck airport. Within the terminal, you will find a Newsagent, MPREIS supermarket and a Duty-Free shop.
From traditional Austrian baked goodies to contemporary international cuisine, Innsbruck Airport has a good selection of bars and restaurants:
The Tyrol Lounge is available at Innsbruck Airport for an additional cost for passengers (free for Austrian & British Airways business class ticket holders). The modern airport lounge has several sofas and tables with breath-taking panoramic views of the Tyrolean mountains, as well as workspaces and a selection of hot and cold snacks.
