Weather in Mexico

As Mexico is such a large country, weather conditions and terrains can vary across destinations. Inland northern Mexico has typically dry conditions, temperatures soar in summer months and drastically drop in winter months due to travelling north winds. Temperatures in Central Mexico are usually warm during the day and cool down after sunset. The Mexican Riviera (Pacific coast region) and Southern Mexico has hot weather throughout the year and experiences a rainy season from June to October. The Gulf Coast region has high humidity and generally hot temperatures all year-round. The Yucatan Peninsula has warm temperatures throughout the year.

Seasonality in Mexico

The Mexican Caribbean experiences sunshine all year round, making it a popular holiday destination. However, its tourism industry particularly thrives during the peak season, especially during the Christmas holidays, February half-term break and Easter period. During these times there is a tonne of events going on and businesses flourish. For that reason, booking as early as possible is highly recommended.

Peak season in Mexico

Peak season coincides with the dry season which spans from December to April. During this time, you can expect blazing sunshine and warm temperatures. December – February are the coolest months, but you can still enjoy plenty of swimming and sunbathing.

Low season in Mexico

Low season lasts from May to mid-December in most parts of Mexico. The rainy season begins in May and ends in September. You can still have a great holiday in the rainy season as rain usually falls in the late afternoon or evening. Hurricane season spans from June to November, the likelihood of a storm happening is higher from August to October. Cancun has a particularly low likelihood of hurricanes, with only two occurring in the last 30 years.

Mexico is blessed with warm weather all year round, but idyllic conditions are felt from December through to April. Luckily for us, that lines up perfectly to escape harsh British winters! From floating through crystalline waters to exploring ancient civilizations, Mexico is brimming with possibilities...

The dry season spans from December to April, this is the perfect time to visit Mexico’s beaches. With lots of sun and little rain, you’re sure to experience the best balmy beach days during this time.

From May to August, Cancun experiences a surge in seaweed in the ocean, which often gathers in piles on the beaches. There are still plenty of patches of sea clear from seaweed, as it mainly gathers up on the water line. Hotel staff often try to clear the beaches each morning, but it’s something be aware of during this period if you want picturesque, pristine beaches.

Diving in the Yucatan Peninsula can be enjoyed all-year round, although the best visibility and calmest waters can be found from July to December. The best snorkelling and diving sites can be found in Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen and Akumal. Xel-Ha and Yal Ku Lagoon are excellent spots to take children snorkelling. Cenote diving is best experienced between May-September, this is when you’ll experience the best light and capture spectacular photographs. Hawksbill turtles lay their eggs from May to September, so you’re more likely to spot them during these months.

For avid surfers, the best time for surfing is between April to September. If you’re a beginner, you’ll experience calmer waves between November to March. If surfing is your priority, Los Cabos is a prime destination for hitting the best waves. For those visiting Cancun, the best time for surfing is between June and November.

You’ll experience sunshine all year-round Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, but for guaranteed balmy weather it’s best to travel during peak season between December - April. If you want to explore all the popular sites but don’t like crowds, it might be best to travel in November at the tail end of hurricane season. It will be less crowded than peak season and daytime temperatures sit at a comfortable 25°C.

Mexico in January

The average temperature in Mexico in January is 23°C and there’s very little rainfall during this month. This is a fantastic time to visit, with plenty of events to combat those January blues. On the 6th of January, the country celebrates Three Kings’ Day, the last of the Christmas festivities which involves vibrant parades and festive lights. Be sure to try some traditional Rosca de Reyes, a sweet bread decorated with dried fruits.

Mexico in February

The weather in February is warm, sunny and dry. The average temperature is 24°C and there’s little rainfall this month. A national celebration takes place this month in the shape of Carnaval. Most cities light up for a five-day celebration of street parties, which feature parades, dance and live music. Cozumel is famous for being the most popular and extravagant carnival destination.

The weather in March is hot, sunny, and dry, the average temperature reaches 25° C. Cancun can be busy this month due to the American spring break season. Mayatlon takes place during this month, which is a triathlon raising money for educational projects in the Riviera Maya.

The weather during the April is hot, average temperatures reach 27° C. There’s very little rainfall and plenty of bright, sunny days. Cancun and Riviera Maya are particularly popular during this season due to the American spring break season. Places like Cancun and Playa del Carmen will have the best party events in full-swing.

Mexico in May

The weather is hot and balmy in May, average temperatures reach 28° C. There’s slightly more rainfall this month, but still plenty of bright and sunny days. Cinco de Mayo is a famous Mexican holiday celebrating the country’s victory during the Franco-Mexican War. On this day streets are linked with mariachi bands and parades.

June marks the start of hurricane season, so there is more likelihood of rainy spells and storms, however, hurricanes are extremely rare. The weather is hot and temperatures reach 27° C.

Hurricane season continues through July, so there’s an increased chance of rain and storms, however, hurricanes are extremely rare. The weather is hot and average temperatures reach 27° C. This time of year still experiences sunshine, but with more occurrences of overcast and cloud cover. Hurricane season continues through September, so it can be quite rainy during this month, however, hurricanes are extremely rare. The weather is hot with sunny spells, average temperatures reach 28° C. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on the 16th of this month, a day filled with fireworks, street parties and confetti.

Mexico in October

Hurricane season spans through October, meaning that rain and storms are more likely, but hurricanes remain extremely rare. The weather is hot, average temperatures reach 27° C. Playa del Carmen is well-known for its Halloween celebrations, on Fifth Avenue you’ll find costume parades and street parties.

Mexico in November

Hurricane season continues through November, but there is usually less rainfall this month than previously. The weather is warm and balmy, average temperatures reach 25° C. The Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is traditionally celebrated by Mexican families from the 1st - 2nd of November.
