Christmas Mexico holidays

Switch the snowmen for sandcastles this festive season, Mexico is calling! Although you may immediately think of Día de Los Muertos when you think of Mexican holidays, the Christmas traditions in Mexico are just as vibrant. So, raise a glass of Ponche Navideño (like mulled wine, but better) and kick off the festivities in style...

Christmas traditions in Mexico

Las Posadas (The Inns) begins on the 16th of December, nine days before Christmas to represent the nine months that the Virgin Mary was pregnant with Jesus. This tradition also emphasises hospitality and the importance of welcoming others, something which is a heavy part of Latin American and Hispanic culture.

Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) is celebrated with a children-led procession to the church and a midnight mass. Afterwards, there are fireworks displays and piñata parties. Navidad (Christmas) is spent at church and with family. Dinner traditionally consists of oxtail soup, beans, chilli, roast turkey and fresh salad.

On the 6th of January, the celebrations continue with Día de Los Tres Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day). On this day, a traditional Hispanic sweet bread called Rosca de Reyes is served. Children open presents from the ‘the three kings’ that have been left the night before in their shoes.
