One of the world's greatest lift-served verticals is reached by cable car from Alagna, as is the Monte Rosa ski area by marked off-piste descents. A haven for advanced skiers who have a heliskiing operation too to access yet more off-piste terrain.

There's not a huge choice of activities beyond skiing in the region, although enough to keep you busy in your spare time if you are spending full days on the piste. Alternatives outdoors include ice climbing, ski mountaineering and snow shoe walks on nature routes in the Valle di Otro and the Parco Alta Valsesia. Alagna has a sports centre with an ice rink nearby as well as a museum. Gressoney La Trinite offers climbing and there's a museum, swimming pool, sports centre and weekly market in neighbouring Gressoney-St-Jean.

"Alagna Valsesia" by any other name

The Italian resort is also known as Alagna Monte Rosa and has common misspellings:

The direction which the various Alagna Valsesia slopes face can make or break your ski holiday. To guarantee good snow conditions, choose a resort with piste which face the right way for the time of year you're travelling.

- In the coldest winter months of January and February pick a resort with sunny south facing slopes, so your days on the snow doesn't feel like a polar expedition. Conversely, in the warmest spring skiing months of March and especially April, a resort with cool and shady north facing trails will ensure you're not riding on slush, but benefitting from best late season snow. The best destinations have areas which face in all directions so that you're guaranteed greating conditions whatever the weather. Alagna Valsesia has slopes facing NE NW SE SW.

Alagna Valsesia Shopping

Alagna Valsesia shopping - fashion boutiques, outdoor gear and food shops

There are rather limited shopping opportunities, the best in the boutiques of the larger towns. There are craft shops in most of the villages too though, where local goods and creations may be purchased. The best known local product is a special shoe - 'Scapini' with a hemp and wool sole. But carvers also create statuettes of shepherds and animals. In the Gressoney Valley furniture manufacture is the speciality as well as the creation of the local traditional dress. The really ancient art of "puncetto" - a kind of hand made lace featuring a thousand knots in a square centimetre of material - is also practised here. The art has Saracen origins and was introduced to the valley by those locals who took part in the crusades.
