Established in 1936 the Italian ski resort Abetone lies at 1400 metres altitude in the Toscana / Tuscany region of the Italian Apennines / Appennines. With the highest lifts and ski slopes at 1900m the area is not snow sure. Over 110 snow cannons ensure artificial snow making covers 24km of trails, which equates to around 40 of the slopes. The nearest airport transfer to Abetone is Florence / Firenze at a distance of 80km or approximately ? minutes driving time. Their season runs from December to April.

The direction which the various Abetone slopes face can make or break your ski holiday. To guarantee good snow conditions, choose a resort with piste which face the right way for the time of year you're travelling.
- In the coldest winter months of January and February pick a resort with sunny south facing slopes, so your days on the snow doesn't feel like a polar expedition. Conversely, in the warmest spring skiing months of March and especially April, a resort with cool and shady north facing trails will ensure you're not riding on slush, but benefitting from best late season snow. The best destinations have areas which face in all directions so that you're guaranteed greating conditions whatever the weather. Abetone has slopes facing ?.

Abetone is a good choice for families with its friendly base and family ski slopes. The local ski school takes children for special classes and has baby parking at its location on Piazzas Piramidi. Special deals are available on lodging and lift tickets, particularly in the low season and there are good restaurants and hotels particularly suited to family groups.

Of course these include plenty of ski shops as well as souvenir outlets and unsurprisingly wood carving is a popular local activity. Typical food from this area includes Porcini mushrooms, local pecorino sheep's milk cheese, cured meats and frutti di bosco (wild berries). The local honey is also excellent.
