A lot of things make Engelberg a favourite for short breaks and ski weekends: getting here is easy, the town is beautiful, and there’s a good amount to do on and off the slopes. The road transfer from Zürich airport (ZRH) takes about 1h 40, or you can opt for a 2-hour train journey which itself becomes part of the holiday as you whizz past gorgeous scenery.
B&B or half board hotels provide most of the short break accommodation in these parts – letting you choose whether you want the freedom to eat out at lunch and dinner times, or have most of your meals covered in the cost of your stay.
When it comes to the white stuff, there are a handful of small ski areas to divide your time between, including intermediate friendly Titlis, cruisey bluesy Bannalp and sunny Brunni. Devote a day to exploring each one and you’ll be able to really explore the area, even if you’re only here for a few days. The freeriding is awesome if you’re here on a good snow weekend, with favourite runs including the Laub and Steinberg.
Off the slopes, you can wander around the Belle Epoque town, soak up the sights from the highest suspension bridge on the continent or join in the après at Yucatan.
