Easter traditions in Bermuda

On Good Friday, people head to various parts of the island to show off, test and view other homemade kites that soar into the skies with their signature hum. This is a popular tradition that both locals and visitors alike can get behind. The kites tend to be brightly coloured and feature bold, geometric designs, the best even win prizes!

While most people might think of Ham, deviled eggs, and chocolate when it comes to food for Easter, in Bermuda, their dishes revolve around traditions that have an extensive and slightly unusual history. The two major staples of Bermudian Easter cuisine are codfish and hot cross buns. Hot cross buns have a special significance in Bermuda – back in the day, there was a superstition that if the homeowner did not consume a hot cross bun on Good Friday, their house would be burned to the ground. Bermudians have learned to see through the myth but have continued to enjoy these tasty treats over the years. It is also customary to enjoy some codfish, usually served as a fishcake with potatoes for breakfast on Sunday.

Best places to celebrate Easter in Bermuda

Many locals attend the sunrise services, and while you don’t necessarily have to attend this, you are able to venture down to the water's edge, in spots like Horseshoe Bay and watch the sunrise – a magical, peaceful moment to share with your most cherished ones.

Many people spend Easter with their family, and friends and this is a great time for visitors to do so as well – why not hike an easy trail through the luscious vegetation on the islands or have a picnic on one of your favourite beaches while you watch the colourful kites in the clear, blue sky.
