Weather in Guadeloupe

It’s summer all year round in Guadeloupe! The islands enjoy exceptional temperatures averaging 27°C, there is very little difference between the hottest months and cooler months. Rain occurs throughout the year, usually in short bursts, quickly followed by bright sunshine. This happens more frequently during the wet season (June to November) and in the mountainous regions of the islands.

Rainfall in Guadeloupe varies by quantity depending on the island – the exposed slopes in Basse-Terre is one of the wettest areas, while Grande-Terre and Marie-Galante receive considerably more sunshine. You can avoid the worse of the rain by staying on the coast but do always be prepared for short downpours in this tropical climate.

Seasonality in Guadeloupe

The tropical climate in Guadeloupe is characterised by two seasons – a dry and cooler season (24°C -32°C) from January to April called carême, and a rainy, hot and humid season (21°C -31°C) from June to November, called hivernage. The topical weather is unpredictable and changes rapidly.

Sea temperatures are perfect throughout the year, ranging between 26°C-29°C, making it ideal for swimming and watersports whatever the time of year. There is a risk of hurricanes passing over the islands during hivernage from August to November, most likely in September.

Peak season in Guadeloupe

Peak season in Guadeloupe falls between December and April, during the dry season when the weather is most desirable. These are the best months for snorkelling, surfing, hiking La Grande Soufrière and whale watching.

The busiest times to visit Guadeloupe are around the French school holiday, so you’ll expect to find holiday prices more expensive at Christmas, New Year, February and Easter.

Low season in Guadeloupe

The low season in Guadeloupe starts in May and runs through to November, during the wet season when rainfall is more frequent, and there is a risk of hurricanes. There is no shortage of sunshine during these months, averaging 8 hours of sun each day – more than enough to get a tan! This time of year is great for a holiday as prices are lower, beaches are quieter, nature is lush and full of colour, and there are many events over the summer months.

Holidays in Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe has a hot and tropical climate year-round, but December to April generally has the best weather. It is a popular destination for adventure seekers craving more than just a relaxing beach break. Hike up an active volcano, trek through rainforests, discover hidden waterfalls, visit rum distilleries, wander botanical gardens, surf some of the finest waves in the Caribbean and explore endless fascinating snorkelling spots.

The beaches of Guadeloupe can be enjoyed all year round since temperatures rarely drop below 25°C. For the least chance of rain ruining your tanning time, visit between January and April and outside of the French school holidays for quieter beaches.

Spend your days relaxing on the beautiful and rarely crowded beaches full of white, golden, black and even pink sand. Favourites include the golden bays of Grande-Anse beach in Basse-Terre, the sugary white sands of Datcha Beach in Gosier and Plage Malendure's volcanic black-sand beach.

Both main islands boast dry conditions from January to May, making it the best time of year to enjoy the island's stunning beaches and snorkelling in the clear waters. The sea temperatures remain warm all year, with water hardly dipping below 25°C. There are lots of excellent snorkelling spots across Guadeloupe's islands. Our favourites include: Malendure and Petit Malendure is a great area to spot turtles feeding off the seagrass. Petite Anse is a protected cove with an abundance of fish, sea urchins and coral just off the coastline. Don't forget to bring your own snorkel gear from home as you cannot rent these.

One of the best reasons to visit Guadeloupe is the magnificent scuba diving spots. The dive sites around the islands vary in diversity, but the diving around the Pigeon Islands, off the coast of Basse-Terre, is considered to be one of the best in the Caribbean. Most famous of all, Jacques Cousteau's Underwater Reserve features a thriving shallow reef, an impressive selection of fish, and Jacques Cousteau's statue.

Guadeloupe is one of the best places in the East Caribbean for surfing. The main swell season runs from November to April with more consistent waves, but all other months offer decent conditions. There are waves to suit both first timers and seasoned surfers in Guadeloupe. Grande-Terre offers the greatest surf spots; beginners should try out Port Louis, Petit Havre and Anse a la Bouelle. Le Moule - Damencourt, Anse Bertrand and La Perle have faster waves for the more advanced surfer.

The best time of year for sightseeing and outdoor activities is between December and April, when temperatures are more comfortable, and rain is less frequent. If you are planning on hiking La Grande Soufrière or trekking through the rainforest, be prepared for wet weather, even in the dry season, as it is humid and rainy all year round in the higher regions.

Humpback whales can be spotted between December and April, with many other species seen throughout the year, including pilot whales, pygmy sperm whales, orca and dolphins. Book a boat trip from the north-western corner of Basse-Terre for the best chance of seeing whales. Bottlenose dolphins are spotted year-round.
