Naked SNO Party in Chinese Ski Resort

Tianchi ski resort in the mountains of western China hosts a bare back-country bash

nude ski holidays

any naturist skiers out there?

Many of we seasoned skiers and seasonaires have attended ski and snowboarding shin-digs in fancy dress but, of the hundreds who arrived to party on the piste last month at the Tianchi International Ski Resort, in Urumqi, Xinjiang province, some were wearing costumes with a less insulation than you might expect.

While most guests arrived in outfits that were strange in the extreme, maximum kudos has to go to the two dozen who sallied forth onto the snow in their birthday suits.  Braving both the sub-zero temperatures and (unsurprisingly) a lot of attention from fellow revellers and media alike, they slid out onto the piste with either  sno clothes (a few really were sporting only skis, boots and their own “equipment”) or very nearly skiing naked.

I think my favourite part of the photo above is the chap standing primly with his clip board to judge the winners!

The Naked Pig Event has nothing to do with pork and the contest is not for the shy among us, drawing at least two male skiers who “tackled” the mountain completely nude save for their skis, boots and hats.

The most coveted trophy for “Coldest Beauty” was won by Xie Yong, whose costume consisted of a single snowflake.  Zhang Rongmin (or “wrong-un” to his friends) bagged the “Best Costume” award for dressing as a half naked Arab.

Both victors took home an award and a hundred quid in prize money – just enough to pay for the drinking-to-forget that will likely be required in the evening.

“We have this party at the end of the skiing season each year but this has been the best yet,” said the ski resort’s spokesperson.

A bit of harmless fun, but I wonder if there’s something in this idea… any naturist skiers out there fancy a bit of summer glacier skiing in the alps?  Hmm, next project “naked ski holidays“.  If you’re keen, email snoman[at]sno.co.uk quoting ref “sno-clothes”.

sno ski deals?

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Is it me, or does the whole world now describe anything for sale as a “deal”?

They’re not ski holidays anymore, they’re ski deals.  Even when you start to type “april ski ” into google, it offers to complete your sentence as “april ski deals“.  So are we suddenly getting a better price than we did last year?

Or is it just different words for the same stuff… so we feel like we’re getting more than we’re paying for?

deal or sno deal

If you’d like to know how to spot the best ski deals, then read on, because this is where we spill the beans (special beans which we’re giving to you completely free with all of our cheap ski deals ;-)

No, I’m not going to give you all the gen here – to read all of our secrets on how the find the best ski deal, simply go to the main sno ski deals page and scroll down to below the holidays (its a sno secret spot).

Cooler than ski holidays?

Monday, February 21st, 2011

What can you do in ski resorts that’s more exciting than ski holidays?

“Wingsuit Base Jumping” may be the coolest thing in the history of very cool things.

We’d all like to ski like James Bond and, with Brits booking more ski holidays than ever before, many of you probably can.  But the days of Connery are long gone and now the most adrenalised feats pulled off by the contemporary 007 are considerable more extreme than skiing fast while pursued by motorbikes with machine guns.

You might remember the vintage Bond moment where he skis off the cliff to certain death, only to see a parachute open as the hero floats gracefully away.  This may be the first cinematic portrayal of the now widely known sport of “base jumping” (albeit on skis), but the modern super spy has since given up on the parachute, in preferance of the newer/faster/cooler “wingsuit” which facilitates (in the words of Buzz Lightyear) “falling with style”.

The guys in this jaw dropping film have gone one better, and teamed the high speed thrills of a wingsuit (normally flown by jumping out of an aeroplane) with the near-cliff peril of base-jumping.

Cooler than ski holidays?  possibly – More lethal?  definitely

A whole new meaning of “terminal velocity” – expect to see this in the next Bond movie!

(& annoyingly the next series of Top Gear, accompanied by middle-aged car-based banality)

The Secret of Half Term Ski Deals

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

Believe it or not, there are still some great half term ski deals to be had and, if you’re relaxed about where you ski at half term, you don’t have to spend a fortune on family skiing in the half term school break.

ski deals in half term break

With just 5 days to go until the school half term, skiing is probably on the mind of most parents who are reluctant to take their child snow skiing during term time - last minute half term ski deals are the answer when you want to ski in the school holidays without breaking the bank.

Here are our top tips on how to bag the best and the cheapest half term ski deals:

1. check for new deals each morning, because they get updated overnight – if you check later or in the evenings, someone else will have grabbed the cheapest half term skiing first!

2. don’t wait to bookhalf term ski holidays are very much like christmas ski holidays and new year ski holidays – they only get more scarce, rarely any cheaper, because ski travel companies know that demand always outstrips supply for half term skiing deals

3. make your group size match the room size for the best half term ski holiday that you find – if the best price you find is for filling a room of 5, but you only have a family of 4, don’t moan about how unfair the world is, just invite all your childrens’ friends (tell their parents the first to pay gets the place) – that way you get the best price for maximum ocupancy and your child gets to be the cool kid at school who takes their friends skiing!

With just a week to go, the best tip for not missing out on a great family half term skiing together is to get your skates on – call someone like us, explain what you need and let a ski travel professional help you find the best half term ski deal going!

The Curse of Last Minute Ski Holidays

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

With record last minute ski bookings,

why are so many disappointed,

and how can you beat the system?

last minute ski deals

how to bag the best last minute ski deals

It’s my first winter on the inside of the ski travel industry and I’m learning exactly how the giant winter travel companies work.  All my skiing and snowboarding mates want to know the same thing – how can you ensure you (a) grab the best last minute ski holidays before they’re gone and (b) find the very cheapest last minute ski deals.

Here are 3 simple tips that explain why you might have struggled in the past, and how to land the best last minute ski holidays in future:

1. Search the “fresh” last minute ski deals in the morning, and call to book straight away.

My first tip explains “when” the industry insiders get the best deals.  I’ve told all my friends and customers the answer to this… and its simple too… just go look for deals in the morning, not the afternoon or evening!

Why?  It’s because of how online ski holidays work – basically all the websites update overnight (i.e. not in real time, like the booking systems we travel professionals use).  The new deals will appear when you go look in the morning, but the best deals get seen by everyone, so they start to sell out during the day.  The upshot is that skiers who go look, and then call to book that very morning, are likely to find those online ski deals are still available… those who do it after work in the evening will be less successful.

2. Don’t procrastinate or try to wait for a little extra discount – if you spot it, grab it!

My second tip is that “procrastination” is the enemy of any attempt to book a last minute ski deal.  Every day, I tell people who are deliberating over a ski trip, “there is only 1 of these rooms left, it is the cheapest one in ‘x’ ski resort, everyone else will see this too, if you want it, you must grab it”… only to get a call back from them, a whole day later, saying “we’d like to book that ski deal now…” and of course by then it has long gone.  I’m unsure why they don’t take the urgency seriously – maybe they think I’m just trying to sell them something, or maybe it’s human nature to think the world will work the way we want it to… either way, the people who get the best ski deals are those who realise that waiting for one final thirty quid discount is really only going to lose you the whole thing.  Carpe diem

3. For the very cheapest last minute ski holidays, take your snow mates.

The cheapest last minute ski deals are usually for groups of 4, because the most available ski accommodation, in the last week before departure, is the self catering apartment – most of these are for up to 4 or more, and those amazing prices you see online are for “maximum occupancy”.  If you put only 2 people in an apartment for 4, it’s unlikely to be the same price per person.

In the past, only a few intrepid deal hunters went looking for last minute ski deals online, but now it has become the norm.  It’s good because tour operators are discounting more at the last minute, but it’s tough because you’re searching in competition with thousands of other bargain hunters.

Follow these three simple rules and finding a last minute ski deal is easy – happy hunting!

Meribel Ski Holidays

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Meribel is, without doubt, the longest running favourite ski holidays resort of British skiers and snowboarders.  Here’s what I said on Telegraph online about Meribel ski holidays.

meribel ski holidays

a funny thing happened on my Meribel ski holiday

Ski holidays in Meribel can be anything you want them to be…

… from a wild and crazy week spent between pulling in Dicks T-Bar and mile-eating across the 3 Valleys…

… to a beautifully refined experience being cossetted in a catered Meribel ski chalet

… and everything in between.

So adept is Meribel at catering to every Brit ski taste, that they’ve had to grow a second Meribel called “Mottaret”, which means that you can have the “Meribel experience” even in the very height of season.

If you can afford it, stay in or near the centre of town, because skiing Meribel is about more than just the experience on the mountain.  Yes, you have central access to the largest ski area in the world, so lets say that awesome days on the hill are a given… and talk about the Meribel apres ski

… and Meribel ski holidays are ALL about the apres!

Rob Smart

another nicely lubricated lunch with Meribel Rob

The two chaps who run Bar-O (don’t say the full name “Bar-O-meter” unless you want to be marked out as a complete tourist) make sure this is perhaps the most reliably relaxed and cool spot to sink a shandy or two…

… the legend that is the Evolution bar (again, you have to say “Evo” to be down with the kids) is an essential gps coordinate on your iPhone…

… and it seems written into local byelaws that any big day on the hill must segway into an even bigger evening in Meribel resort via a massive kick-start at le Rond Point…

… but Meribel is teeming with famous (in the ski bum world) places to create your own personal ski holiday war stories, so go explore.

I should recomend my own ski resort guide … but, in truth… the best thing to do in Meribel is learn from the Master…

… read the website of Meribel Rob (its called Meribel Unplugged) and you’ll find the best places to eat drink and stay, with no B-S and no bias (as another great guide is famous for saying).

What ever you do for your winter travel, you won’t go far wrong by doing it on a Meribel ski holiday – ignore it’s detractors, they’re either jealous, pompous or have never been.

Meribel is one of those rare exceptions, where being a jack of all trades actually leads to being master of quite a few of them too!
