It’s not hard to see why the Finns flock here at this time of year - February is a great time to visit Lapland. It’s still cold so you get fantastic snow conditions but temperatures are milder than December and January. You also have more daylight hours (an average of 7-8 hours a day). This month also spoils you with beautiful sunsets while you’re skiing and the nights are still long and dark enough to potentially catch the jaw-dropping Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights.
If you’re still craving some peace and quiet there’s miles and miles of wilderness to escape into - you’ll be spoilt for choice for transport with husky rides, reindeer sleighs, snowmobiles and snowshoes being only a few of the amazing forms of transport here.
Feb tends to be the busiest month for skiing in Lapland - the majority of Finns choose this time of year to visit because of the peak snow conditions and daylight hours. However, ‘busy’ by Lapland ski resort standards is still pretty quiet if you’re used to the hustle and bustle of resorts in France - you’ll still be hard-pressed to find a lift queue (unless you’re queuing for the new Sauna Gondola in Ylläs...) and the wide, gentle slopes should have more than enough space.
With all the resorts being fantastically tailored to families, Lapland is a terrific option for something different over February half term – the gentle fells make the perfect setting for a first ski holiday and you’ll find oodles of activities off the slopes as well. There’s even the chance to meet Santa in Rovaniemi to see what he gets up to outside the festive season.
