If you like sun as well as snow, you can’t beat April ski holidays for T-shirt skiing. As the season draws to a close and winter is turning to spring, a week on the mountains takes on a different vibe... holidays at this time of year are all about building up a goggle tan on the sunny slopes, sitting down for long al fresco lunches and loosening those boot buckles early, for relaxed afternoons of après ski.
The days are longer and warmer, which means there’s less need to layer up and the elements are kinder to children, who find learning and playing in warm spring skiing conditions a joy. In clear blue skies, the views of surrounding mountains are incredible. The snowfall in April isn’t the best of the season, but you can still find some good quality conditions if you know where to ski. They say the early bird catches the worm, and this certainly applies when skiing in April. To enjoy the slopes at their best, get up early, hop on the first lift and ski yourself silly before things get slushy. Pick a resort like Val Thorens, Tignes or Les 2 Alpes which has heaps of slopes higher than 2000m and a glacier (the higher the snow, the better it should be). The slopes with the best conditions will be the north facing ones as the snow is shaded - the south facing slopes get the most sunshine so they're likely to get soft earlier in the day.
April is a fantastic month to bring the family if you're keen to get the little ones skiing. They’ll be a lot more comfortable on the slopes now the icy winds and snowstorms have come and gone, meaning they're likely to find skiing easier and more fun and you shouldn’t have to worry about runny noses and chattering teeth. Another great thing about skiing in the spring is the après – there's something about the sun being out that puts everyone in a good mood, and with most restaurants and bars having a sun terrace, afternoons are all about sitting back with a cool beer (huddling up to your hot chocolate to survive the winter chill will be a thing of the past...). There’s less need to take tons of thermals, hand-warmers and the like when you’re packing for a April ski breaks. Instead, make sure you stock up on a high factor sunscreen, a decent pair of sunnies and some statement T’s as it might just be warm enough for a spot of T-shirt skiing…

Val Thorens is arguably the top contender for late-season skiing, being the highest altitude resort of Europe and making up one of the 3 Valleys, along with Meribel and Courchevel. This snow-sure party resort boasts a buzzing après scene and an impressive array of accommodation to choose from – there is something here for everyone. Offering more skiing above 2000m than any other resort in Austria, Ischgl, dubbed the ‘Ibiza on Ice’, is also hugely popular in April and hosts some epic closing parties.

By April, spring skiing will be in full swing. After several weeks of warmer temperatures and sparse snowfall, pistes become hard-packed in the morning and soft by the afternoon. For the best snow at the end of the season stick to resorts with high ski slopes, such as Sölden, Tignes, Hintertux glacier (near Mayrhofen), Les Deux Alpes or Val Thorens.
