Although Sri Lanka is a largely Buddhist country, Christmas is widely celebrated. Throughout the month of December, you will likely see the streets and shopping malls decorated in a traditional Christmas style, as well as plenty of appearances from Santa Claus (Naththal Seeya). Christmas traditions in Sri Lanka

The festive season kicks off on December 1st, with lots of firecrackers and fireworks being set off. The streets and shopping malls are lavishly decorated with traditional Christmas decorations, including the iconic Christmas tree! You’ll find lots of festive markets across the country, some of the best are found in Galle and Colombo. In these markets, you’ll find seasonal treats, gifts, festive music and live performances. Christmas Cake can be found in nearly every cafe and bakery. This traditional treat is inspired by European customs.

On Christmas Eve, many churches hold midnight mass to celebrate the beginning of Christmas. Once the clock strikes midnight hundreds of firecrackers are lit, creating a spectacular show, which is very popular in Sri Lankan festivals. After mass, family and friends share cake and wine at home and exchange presents. Church services are also held on Christmas day, family and friends then gather to share dinner together. Christmas dinner in Sri Lanka consists of roast turkey, stuffing, fruit puddings, vegetables and dinner rolls.
