New Year traditions in Cuba

A famous Cuban tradition is the burning of an effigy on New Year’s Eve followed by a fantastic fireworks display. This symbolises the death of past regrets and bad memories and welcomes good luck for the new year.

Another tradition is to sweep and mop the entire home before the New Year’s Eve festivities begin. Cubans save the bucket of dirty water and throw it out onto the street once midnight strikes, representing all the bad energy from the previous year. Out with the old!

Cuba also shares the Hispanic tradition of eating 12 grapes at midnight, which represent the 12 months of the new year. The grapes are quickly washed down with Sidra (a Spanish apple cider) as the countdown begins.

Best places to celebrate New Year in Cuba

Kick off New Year in Cuba’s timeless capital city, Havana. There are celebrations all over the city, including a cabaret show and live music at Plaza de la Catedral in Old Havana (last time we checked, you needed a ticket for this event). At midnight the real fun begins... fireworks shoot up into the sky along the Malecón road (the 8km stretch along the coast in Havana) and people take to the streets to celebrate.

Best hotels to celebrate New Year in Cuba

New Year's holidays to Cuba promise an explosive party, luscious food and the chance to experience the vibrant culture of the nation. Most resort hotels put on a Gala dinner or special event for New Year.

For families wanting to take in the capital's festivities, stay at Melia Habana, located near the coast and has three stunning pools with panoramic sea views. Stay at the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski for a truly special getaway at New Year. It is in the UNESCO Manzana de Gómez building in old town. We love the breathtaking view from the rooftop, topped off nicely with a cocktail in hand.

Adult groups and couples looking for a lively holiday in a beach hotspot check out Royalton Hicacos Resort & Spa, one of the best all inclusive and adult-only resorts in Cuba. Alternatively, try out Paradisus Princesa Del Mar, an exclusive luxury adult-only eco-resort located on the stunning Varadero beach, one of Cuba's finest beaches.
