New Year traditions in Bali

For the people of Bali, every day is considered a blessing and a cause for celebration. Special occasions, such as New Year's Eve, are therefore seen as moments to express gratitude and religious devotion through prayer and spirituality. In Denpasar, the great temples become the focal point for locals as night falls, before they join in the cultural parades, watch the midnight fireworks and shake hands with everyone they can find. The town of Sanur comes alive with its traditional flags and ochre lights, while the locals indulge in traditional dances accompanied by vibrant music. For many islanders, it is not the Christian date of 31 December that is celebrated as the New Year, but Nyepi, which takes place throughout the year in accordance with the Balinese Saka calendar. On the eve of Nyepi, loud music is played and the celebrations revolve around a parade of papier-mâché giants called Ogoh-Ogoh. But be warned, the day itself is also known as the day of complete silence. The whole island comes to a standstill, everything is closed and the streets remain deserted; at night, all the lights are switched off, hotels close their curtains and noise is reduced to a strict minimum.
