It’s this time of year that gets the sunnier and lighter days but with the temperatures still low, you’ll enjoy the log cabins, saunas and log fires to snuggle up in front of. The slopes are well sheltered so usually have a lengthy season and there’s also lots of cross-country skiing. There isn’t a vast amount of skiing with only 15 runs but watch out because time will fly as you get involved in the activities and become lost in the surroundings.
Swap the Easter bunny for a bigger four-legged animal this year; reindeer are far from scarce across the Lapland landscape. You can ride them at the park and go for a bite to eat in the adjoining Starry Sky hut afterwards. Here, they also run one or two hour Husky rides where you can either snuggle up in a blanket or get behind the wheel (or tails) and do the driving yourself. Snowmobiling also gets the adrenaline going and the guided safari tour is a great way to get the best out of the ride.
For a day trip, the bus into the main Salla town is a 10km journey. There are some more shops and restaurants here to have mooch around as well as a sports centre.
For March-April you get a bit more of the daylight hours than you would at Christmas. Don’t forget to pack extra jumpers and thermals because even with an extra hour or two of daylight you’ll still need to keep warm with temperatures peaking around 3oC.
