Tignes Stats
Tignes (pronounced 'Teens' by Brits and 'Teenya' by the French) is one half of the vast ‘Tignes-Val d'Isere’ ski area, one of the biggest linked domains in France. High-altitude terrain and Grande Motte glacier skiing ensure the resort both opens earlier in the ski season and also closes later than most resorts, and we’ve even seen lifts running for stints of summer skiing. Split into 5 purpose-built villages with distinct characters, it's well linked by pistes, lifts and free buses.
Tignes Le Lac (aka Tignes 2100) is the main village with the widest variety of bars, restaurants, accommodation and shops. It's the oldest part of Tignes, where the original village was relocated after being submerged to create the dam at the bottom of the valley. With the most lifts out and pistes skiing back, plus stunning views across the lake, we recommend Le Lac for a Tignes ski holiday in the centre of the action.
Tignes Val Claret is the highest village at 2150m and best for direct access into the highest parts of the ski area. We recommend this two-tier resort for the liveliest après ski and nightlife, and ski-to-the-door apartments, hotels and chalets. The funicular is the fastest route up the Grande Motte Glacier, making Val Claret our favourite base for skiing Tignes in the warmer months of December and April.
Tignes Le Lavachet is a quieter hamlet across a piste from Le Lac. With similarly central access to the skiing, stay in Le Lavachet for a more relaxed atmosphere.
Tignes Les Boisses rebranded Tignes 1800 is a more recently redeveloped area focussed on authentic alpine charm, with family-friendly stone and wood chalets creating a vibe more akin to nearby Val d'Isere albeit at lower prices.
Tignes Les Brevieres at 1550m is the most charming and also much lower down. Stay here for old farmhouses and trad chalets interspersed with hotels and low key après ski bars and restaurants, with reliable access up into the skiing via the Sache bubble lift.
After being awarded its first Green Snowflake or Flocon Vert in 2022, Tignes continues to improve its eco credentials and is home to Europe's biggest LGBTQ+ winter sports festival European Snow Pride.

L'Armailly L'Armailly is traditional restaurant but also serves amazing pizzas. The old converted mountain farm with plenty of outside seating, at the foot of the Tignes dam, offers hearty, authentic local cuisine, with rustic charm in an amazing setting.

Bazurto Festive Restaurant Bazurto is a Latin American restaurant serving a local cuisine with a twist. The festive element incorporates the apres-ski , with view of the pistes, and the DJ set and festive bar which starts after the diners are done. They also serve lunch. Open from 12pm-3pm and 6pm to 2am.
Restaurant Le Grattalu Named after the ski lift, opening at the same, Grattalu has been running since 1971. Serving hearty Alpine classics, some fondues and raclettes offered with a unusual twist, in a cosy chalet atmosphere, a great please with enjoy a lunch or dinner.
Tignes Après Ski
Tignes' dozens of bars/pubs and 4 night clubs provide some of the best nightlife in the Alps. Val Claret is the liveliest, but villages have great places to eat and drink. Shuttle buses run 24 hours so you can enjoy the evening without worrying about getting home. Where do we go? Jam bar is small but with a great atmosphere and Loop bar pretty much offers it all: with live sport, world class DJ's and well-known comedians as well as great food. For a more sophisticated atmosphere, the Couloir has cocktails and comfy sofas. Tignes Activites for Non-skiers
Tignes is notable for its range of activities for non-skiers. Our non-skiing visitors have experienced the epic Espace Killy scenery on dogsled, horseback, snowmobile and even hang glider! Try ice climbing or snow shoeing, or a different perspective entirely by ice-diving through a hole cut into the frozen lake. There are two children's sledging runs to keep little ones entertained in a mini bobsleigh. Indoors, Tignes has a bowling alley, ice rink and cinemas in both Le Lac and Val Claret with screenings in English and French. Tignes is great for beginner skiers with 9 free lifts too ski without paying for a lift pass. After learning to snowplough, more than half of the vast 300km ski area is easy blue runs.
With its own Cocorico's and direct access to the legendary La Folie Douce, Tignes has some of the liveliest après ski in the alps.
More Tignes Information
Tignes Tourism Office Tignes has three tourist information centres, one in le Lac across the road from the Palafour lift. The second is in Val Claret, on Rue de Val Claret diagonally opposite from the Parking du Golf. There is also an office in Tignes 1800, in Place de l'Eglise. These two are open in peak season.
