Avoid at all costs

I have skied a lot over the years and this is by far and away the worst ski rental shop that I have ever come across. The staff are rude, ignorant and I also had to challenge (successfully) a fraudulent transaction for 200 EUR by them on my bank card, which was never authorised a week after I returned their equipment. Avoid at all costs!!
Mean-spirited SnowDrone Transfer Company

We bought transfers from Geneva Airport to Val D’Isere for Saturday, 21 March returning on Saturday, 4 April with a transfer company called SnowDrone, paying them €300 in advance. Following the French Government’s decision to close the resort on 16 March, the chalet company cancelling the accommodation, the airline cancelling the flight and the FCO advice against travel we advised SnowDrone that we would no longer be travelling and requested a refund. They said that their business was operating as normal and refused a refund, referring us to our travel insurers. Is this fair? The travel insurers stated that they did not cover “resort closure.”

We had a fabulous week. We hadn’t skied in Tignes before but we’ve done a lot of skiing and always had a negative perspective of purpose built resorts – we loved it and all said we would go back! We didn’t spend much time on the local slopes and mainly went straight up and over towards Val d’Isere. We skied the whole area, as far as we could go and it was the best skiing ever. The weather couldn’t have been better: it snowed before we arrived and visibility was low on the first day, then for the rest of the week we were skiing in T shirts.

I’d definitely recommend Tignes to other snowboarders. We had difficult conditions as it was technically early in the season so the runs were pretty hard work in some cases, and some were closed. However it was still really good to be there and we found lots of places to go. I’m sure later in the season is much better but that’s one of the prices you pay when you want to go early!

Really liked Tignes, found some slopes on the second half of the week that we wished we had found earlier, but that’s typical! It’s a good resort for beginners, and all levels – a real all rounder with something for everyone. There didn’t seem to be a lot going on in Le Lac over Christmas, the main entertainment was in the next village down.

We had really bad weather the week we were here, but still managed to get out every day. We found quite a few other things to do, like walking and ice diving and going to bars etc.

Awesome! We only had one or two bad days, the rest was glorious weather. I stayed in Val d’Isere/Le Fornet last year and it was nice to explore from the other side. You can get across to all the ends of the area so there’s lots to do, like jump on a lift easily and head off for the day - it’s definitely good for exploring. I wouldn’t say it was better or worse for a particular level as it’s so vast. There’s something for everyone and even less confident skiers/boarders can travel out and do extra bits and pieces. You can get a long way across on a bubble lift and don’t have to ski any gnarly bits if you don’t want to. It was my son’s first snowboard holiday, he’s 7 and he loved it – there was loads of stuff for him. We went over to Val d’Isere and watched the big air competition and I’d recommend going over if there are any events on.
Half term wasn’t as bad as I thought, the queues were mainly for nursery slopes. The ski schools were all completely fully booked so there were lots of beginners about. But once you’re up and out the way on the bigger slopes it was fine, maybe a little bottle neck at the top but nothing major – there are so many slopes going from each point and it’s so gigantic that sometimes it felt really quiet.

Tignes was a bit too hot in the second half of April, but we had a great time. We usually ski in the Portes du Soleil and stay in Chatel and Morzine, but decided to have a change. Tignes isn’t as pretty but in general it is a well thought out resort. The skiing is great for every level from beginner to advanced. If you haven’t been before, the Folie Douce is excellent. In general, the mountain restaurants are great. I noticed you could do paragliding on a microlight, they’ve got a set up there, it looked quite exciting. There are plenty of ski hire and equipment shops. The restaurants are better down in Le Lac, and the shuttle buses run all night which is great.

I’m 72 and have been going to Tignes for 16 or 17 years now. I would recommend it to anyone who loves skiing. Val Claret up at 2000m is in the centre, and there are so many varied runs of all abilities. Outside the Borsat and Tommeuses Apartments there’s a children’s area and a nice free slope. 1800 has some lovely places and isn’t as popular as Val Claret yet, we like to go down for a coffee there – it’s great if you want a quiet day or are skiing with children. Le Boisses was too far down for March, but has some lovely apartments – you just have to walk a bit to get around.
It’s such a good place for families as you can ski wherever you like. It has everything, so whatever your age or ability there is something to ski. You can plan your day around, following the north slopes for colder snow or the south slopes if it’s snowy. In the afternoons you can get round to the glacier (the Val d’Isere glacier is easier than the Tignes glacier).
The way the lift company have upgraded stuff over the past few years has made the resort very customer orientated. 17 years ago you would have a queue of 300 people shifting in half an hour / 45 minutes, but now the longest queue ever is 6-9 minutes as they’re moving all the time. As far as ski transport goes Val d’Isere is way behind Tignes.
It can get expensive if you’re a family going out for meals, 2 hot chocolates and 2 cost 40 odd euros for a family in front of us!
I get the subsidized pass and tend to stick to areas I know and enjoy, I do a little off piste which Tignes is great for and there is much more mountain guide stuff If you want it.
The ski instructors speak multiple languages and are great.

Absolutely great time in Tignes. The kids had lessons with New Generation and got on very well. I’ve been to Tignes three times now, what more can I say?! It’s a great, family orientated resort.

Such a good resort with lots of opportunity for skiing – the whole reason we chose it is because it’s quite high and has good snow in April, and most of the pistes were still open. We are intermediate / advanced skiers and there’s something for everyone with runs of all colours.

It’s a 60’s resort with apartment blocks, you can’t get away from that! But if you’re here to ski it’s brilliant. I’d definitely say that it’s an intermediate resort. I recommend Tignes and the Chalet Hotel L’Ecrin to everyone – just pray for snow!
Good snow in April

We were very lucky to have both good snow and good sunshine in April in Tignes. Having stayed the year before in La Plagne, Tignes is easier to get around and looks nicer being in a bowl. It seemed to suit all levels of skier and be great for skiers and non-skiers alike.

I want to go again! I’ve been to Tignes a few times are really like it. There are plenty of slopes and there’s always somewhere quiet to find if you look for it. I would say that the resort is good for all levels. Last time I was here there was a free learning slope for beginners, I’m not sure whether it’s still free now they’ve taken the lift out and put another up there. There’s lots going on in the resort if you don’t want to ski or snowboard, I went ice diving which was excellent (and not at all cold in a full dry suit).

Tignes is excellent, I would definitely recommend it if you want a wee bit of adventure. It’s pretty much directly linked to the slopes which is really handy for getting to most places, and across to Val d’Isere etc. One of the links is a black run back which is usually full of people who’ve had more to drink than they should on the way back from Folie Douce… The ski area is broad in terms of difficulties with quite a mix and opportunity to ski basic greens and blues, plus more difficult terrain if you’d rather do reds and blacks. My children snowboard and I would certainly consider taking them.
There didn’t seem to be too outrageous a nightlife, which might affect you if you want to go out until 2am but was ideal for me!

Weather was good and we all liked Tignes – I’m not a skier but my son and his friends enjoyed the Espace Killy and there was plenty for my wife and I to do around the resort. There’s a lovely restaurant called La Ferme which we were recommended and the food there is absolutely super. We went to the wine bar for some wine tasting, there was an English girl running it and she recommended a cocktail night with 2 for 1 drinks, we had a great time.
We booked our skis and boots in advance and it’s worth knowing that the Intersport shop put on a bit of a scam. Booking in advance is meant to give you a 40% discount while booking elsewhere gives you 25%. They took my card and at the end of the week tried to only give me the 25% discount, saying I hadn’t pre-booked. I had to show them my confirmation email for them to take off the full discount. The standard of equipment and service was fine, my son brought sunglasses in the same shop and the girl was extremely helpful. It’s just worth being aware that the guys are on the make and arguing your case if they try and scam you.

I liked Tignes very much. It doesn’t have as much character as some places we’ve been to but the skiing is very good – we covered a lot of the area and went over to Val d’Isere. One thing I noticed was that in the supermarkets, things were a similar price to what you find at home, so you didn't end up paying 300% more for a can of beans like you have to in some resorts! Having been to different locations in the Alps I think I would probably go back to Tignes.

Tignes is a lovely resort and we had brilliant snow, too much snow at the top so some of the runs were closed! We still managed to ride all over the area and go over to Val d’Isere which was great – there’s all sorts for skiers and boarders (we were two intermediate snowboarders). In terms of the town, we went out twice, once for a meal and once just for a mooch about. Would recommend this resort.

I’ve been to Tignes a few times; the Tignes and Val d’Isere pass is just fantastic. If you like skiing lots of different areas the area is vast, with really nice easier runs, lots of medium runs and harder ones to test you.
We skied here in January when you don’t always know what you’re going to get with the weather, but it was great. Anyway if the weather turns, or you’re here at a milder time of year and the lower slopes aren’t great, you’ve always got the glacier - and another glacier over in Val d’Isere (the views at the top are fantastic).

I had never been to Tignes before but was very impressed. It’s easy to reach one end of the resort from the other and the snow and everything was perfect. I arrived just in time for the snow in December – it was a bit cloudy lower down but once you were up it was sunny and bright. It was one of the best holidays of my year!

A no nonsense purpose built ski resort, snow-sure, with skiing way up on the Grande Motte Glacier. You have a huge ski area here, it’s my favourite just for the huge variety on offer, from the snowpark, the easy blues to the off-piste.
The nightlife here is best served by the Le Couloir bar, where there are bands and DJs.

the hgiest village, Val Claret, has loads of different apartment blocks. most of them are okay, especially the two Grand Tichot towers, but try to stay in one thats central to the village as you're near the shops bars and restaurants and still have easy lift access. There's loads of wide easy motorway type pistes, which are lots of fun unless they're packed with crowds of people. the busiest pistes are the Henri and Prariond blues coming down to the resort. Try taking the Tichot lift on the other side because it's less busy, accesses the only freestyle areas in resort (although there's a huge park over the hill in val d'isere) and you can also ski across to the other main section of pistes above Le Lac, the next village down. For the toughest trails head up to the grande motte. you can get the funicular train almost the whole way from the rond point. Descente and double M are two excellent runs. If you want to go to the folie douce in Val D then a standard Tignes liftpass will cover the chair back over, so it's easy. Nightlife in val claret is hectic, and really handy because everywhere you could want to go is right near eachother. The saloon bar is great and has a pool table, the long island jugs are lethal and a solid way to start any night. Dropzone is another good bar. The two clubs are called melting pot and Blue Girl, both play cheesy euro house but are alot of fun, they both smell pretty bad too. Blue girl has a cage for some reason and it's pretty funny watching really drunk people trying to dance in it.

1st time to Tignes, my other half hadn’t skied before and it was pretty tough for her – the Val d’Isere and Tignes area is pretty much for intermediates and more confident skiers. Other than that, for what we wanted it was fine, it was nice to have somewhere we could go in the evenings to find a pub – we weren’t looking for nightclubs so that wasn’t an issue. The only thing you could say about Tignes is that it’s sparse and you have to walk all over the place to get from A to B.

Hadn’t been here before but it’s a good resort, there’s loads of skiing but unfortunately the weather was awful - too windy and snowy which was very strange for the time of year (end of March!). We still skied every day but because a lot of lifts were closed we didn’t make it over to Val d’Isere. I can’t think of anything specific to recommend but try and go on a week with good weather!

We had loads of snow and the sun came out, so it was a lovely week.
There’s loads to ski in Tignes, it goes all the way from Les Brevieres to the other side of Val d’Isere. Unlike the 3 Valleys, where by time you reach the next valley you have to ski back, here you can get across quite quickly, which gives you more time to explore.
Where we stayed in Tignes Le Lac there was plenty going on, with lots of restaurants and bars. The only problem with Le Lac is that you have to be an advanced skier to ski back from the Val d’Isere side as the route is graded black. I would recommend coming down in the bubble or staying in Val Claret, which has better access for beginners.
Another tip is to definitely book lessons in advance, we ended up having to get private 1:1 lessons with ESF and Ultimate, which meant the children had lessons at different times in the morning and afternoon.

We had a great week away, I can’t complain about anything in Tignes. We were staying in Val Claret which is so much easier for getting to Val d’Isere, just take one lift and you’re up. The Folie Douce is over there so we got to enjoy a bit of après and the nightlife in Tignes is really good – we went out every night at 1am and had an amazing time. It was national gay week so it was difficult to get into some clubs but we managed to find others! The whole area is just very well thought out. I’d say the skiing is probably not so good if you’re a beginner, but that may be because we didn’t do many blues. Tignes is an off-piste person’s dream, there was lots of powder even though it was late in the season, which is something I was initially concerned about. As well as all the pistes and off piste, there are snowparks as well with a ski cross, big jumps and air bags – there’s no way you could get bored here.

I did a season here in 2014/5. Its a great place to ski, the palafour run is great to get your ski legs back. Double M is a great run for intermediates with lots of little bumps on the side for those feeling a bit more adventurous. Loop is great for a beer on sunny days often they have a live band outside. Marmot arms is great for burgers and a drink. Le Ferm is a really nice gourmet restaurant, and is typically French. Queue de Cochon, formerly Scottys is also really good for dinner or a civilized cocktail in the evenings. The best off piste snow was in February and sunnier in March and April. With loads of excellent ski schools as well catering for all needs from beginners to advanced. I would recommend Ultimate Snowsports. Defiantly get a guide if you want to try the off-piste skiing. Overall a really good resort, I had an excellent 6 months here and cannot wait to go back!

Tignes skiing was really good, the off-piste is excellent and good piste skiing to suit everyone in the group. Palafour is a great run to get your ski legs back on. Loop bar in the village was great for a beer on the sunny terrace after skiing, and marmot arms pub was really good for a burger in the evenings. Le Ferm is an excellent restaurant. Queue de Cochon was also really nice with the live music on a sunday.

We had lots of snow (end of March, beginning of April) which meant bad visibility, but we were still out every day and liked the area, it just meant that we didn’t get to explore as much as we’d have liked to because a lot of the lifts were closed. We did make it over to Val d’Isere one day and in better conditions I think it would have been a really good week of skiing.

I’d skied in Tignes before and my Dad (an intermediate skier) who was here for the first time really enjoyed it. We were quite lucky as it snowed whereas previous weeks had been quite patchy.
I snowboarded this time and would really recommend Ultimate – a British ski and snowboard school I randomly found on the tourist office website and probably the best instructors I’ve ever had.

Perfect weather for our first week in Tignes, really liked it as a resort. We skied all the way over to Val d’Isere and I would definitely advise people to get the full pass and ski the whole lot. We had an amazing time!

A great place, we’ve been a lot of times. The ski area’s well connected with a good lift service and there’s great skiing for all abilities. Of the advanced skiing, there’s some fairly safe off piste on the side of the runs.
This was one of the best ski holidays we’ve had. We stayed in late March but were really lucky with conditions – it was a bit thin and crusty when we first arrived but then we had good snow after that. The glacier was closed on one occasion due to fog but there’s so much else to do that it wasn’t a problem. There was quite a lot of off piste to enjoy and we enjoyed the itinerary off piste runs.
We went to the swimming pool which has a 25m pool that’s free with your lift pass. There’s also a very good gym (which you have to pay extra to use but it’s not a huge amount). The dining on the mountains is good and not as expensive as other resorts (once paid 11€ for a bottle of water in Switzerland!). There’s a fantastic restaurant on the slopes down towards Les Brevieres – can’t recall the name but it’s a really small French one and I’d highly recommend it. Flying into Chambery was good as the transfer’s only a couple of hours.

This was a first time in Tignes for all of us but we all had a great week. It’s a good place to ski, with slopes that weren’t too hard for the less experienced people and more difficult stuff for the rest of us. I think we’d all quite happily go back.

Tignes isn’t a pretty resort but it has good skiing and a good lift system, with no queuing. Tignes is very high which is great for snow and the week we spent here had good conditions on the slopes. It’s not the size of the 3 Valleys (I managed to ski every run in the Espace Killy in 4 days) and the only drawback is the transfer which is quite long.

The conditions are as good as it gets in Tignes and I’d go back - the snow was fantastic and we had a great time. Ski wise, it’s such a vast area (we went for the whole Espace Killy pass). There’s plenty to do in the town and we found really nice restaurants and a bit of good après.

We’re all fairly decent skiers who have skied together since the children were little (they’re now in their teens) and loved the ski area. We were quite lucky because it had good snow at the beginning of the season. It’s a great resort, we skied locally on the first day but it was quite crowded as there were a lot of uni groups staying in the main part of Tignes… After that we went up and out over to Val d’Isere where there was more space and less people.

Before this holiday I’d only ever visited Tignes when I’d skied over from Val d’Isere. As a resort, Tignes is lovely and Val Claret where we stayed had everything we needed. The best thing about it is the access to the skiing, I’m all about the skiing! The snow was alright, though by the end of the week it was a bit sketchy in places. It’s definitely a good ski area for advanced skiers, even though they didn’t open the glacier very much it was perfect for us.

I’ve been to Val d’Isere a couple of times and this was my first time staying in Tignes. It’s a lot quieter than Val d’Isere, which has a lot more going on. Tignes is nice but it’s more of a family place and I wasn’t staying with family so personally I’d rather go back to Val d’Isere – we had the Espace Killy pass so spent 3 days over there anyway!

Tignes is awesome. It has a massive ski area and some really good lift-accessed off piste and backcountry. The snow’s good and the area as a whole’s pretty snow sure. I went heliskiing with Evolution 2 who organised a reverse heli-ski trip, which was incredible. Also did a guided backcountry day with another company. If it’s your first time in Tignes, go to the glacier on a nice day as the views are incredible. Stayed in Lavachet this year which doesn’t have as much going on as Val Claret where we’ve stayed previously.
Better for experienced skiers

We were redirected to Tignes from Chamonix with 48 hours’ notice because there wasn’t much snow at the beginning of the 14/15 season. If you’re an experienced skier you would probably rate it higher but from my perspective there weren’t enough greens open for me to get my ski legs back on. Things like the ice rink weren’t open as it was the very beginning of the season although I’m not sure we would have used them anyway as our priority is skiing.

We’ve been to the Portes du Soleil for four years running and thought we’d try something different, but we wish we hadn’t! Tignes wasn’t a patch on the Portes du Soleil, it’s a bit of a concrete jungle whereas we’d previously had old Swiss cottage style buildings and resorts with a lot more character.
The skiing wasn’t as diverse in Tignes either, the Portes du Soleil has a better range of alpine areas, pistes and snowparks.

Tignes is a great place to stay, been there 4 times now. The skiing is so good, especially when you have the Val d’Isere pass as you can go all the way out. If you go all the way over to the far east side of Val d’Isere you’ll find all these great red runs with no one on them - not sure I want to recommend this as I’d like to keep them to myself!
Tignes is always busy and there are some really good bars and restaurants – we ate at Karl Gustav which was expensive but really nice!

Tignes is a really nice ski resort, probably one of the better resorts we’ve been to. The snow was good and it snowed during the week, so while visibility wasn’t always great, we had enough snow. The ski area is mixed enough that everyone could enjoy it, and you can ski further afield if you want to. We went out a few nights and again the apres ski was better than we’ve had in other resorts, probably because Tignes is so big.

Been to Tignes a couple of times and will definitely go back, it’s a cracking ski area with really varied slopes – I’d definitely recommend Tignes to snowboarders. The prices in the pubs are now very much on the steep side (£10 a pint in some places).

Tignes is great, it’s not as pretty as other resorts, but the skiing is really good and quite snow sure. It was a bit icy on the first couple of days but overall really good. Our ski school met outside a coffee shop in Val Claret, really near our hotel (La Vanoise – highly recommended) our instructor was fabulous and we progressed really well.

Hadn’t been to Tignes before, it’s a nice resort with really good après. The snow wasn’t too bad, it was a lot better than we thought it would be considering the bad start to the season, and it only started getting icy towards the end of the week.
The only problem I had was that I wanted some snowboarding lessons and everyone I asked (there seemed to be lots of ski schools there) either didn’t do them, had full groups/not enough people for a group or only catered to beginners. Tignes is the only resort I’ve been to where I couldn’t get lessons.

We’ve been to Tignes several times – it works for us as a family because we’re skiers and snowboarders of varied levels. There’s a lot around the area and I always find a lot to do for me as a beginner. Tignes has some good bars like the Loop bar in the centre. The New Year celebrations were very good for the family – in the past they’ve imported DJ’s but this year was more family-friendly with acrobats and fireworks. This was the bad week in terms of the transfer to resort because of all the snow after Christmas, but it did mean that the sun and snow came out which was perfect.

If you haven’t been to Tignes before, definitely make a play for the lake / le lac area. It’s a big bowl of restaurants, pizza stalls, shops and good runs. We went swimming every night in the lagoon there (access is free as soon as your ski pass is activated, you just swipe to get in). It has an Olympic pool as well as a fun pool with whirlpools etc. On Christmas eve, we came out of the pool just in time to see the big Christmas event in full swing which was quite exciting – they’d put a stage up with performers and acrobatics.
The buses were frequent throughout the week, coming every ten minutes or so, and the lift queues were fine despite it being school holidays.
Weather wise, we spent the whole week waiting for snow and then there was loads as we left! We had a bluebird Christmas day though which was great :-) A lot of the runs had turned into ice rinks so I changed my skis on the first day and we avoided the black runs – the reds were scary enough on their own at the time! We found plenty of nice blues. The better snow was over towards Val d’Isere, where I also noticed a big blue run with a speed check on which would be great for beginners. All in all - good runs for all levels.
Our return was over the weekend of freak snowfall that closed roads, cancelled flights and caused havoc, we managed to get to the airport and onto the plane but then they took everyone off the plane… We were put up in the luxury Grand Plaza hotel in Geneva – it seemed bad at the time but when we found out about people sleeping on gymnasium floors we realised we were quite lucky and all in all, the British camaraderie kept spirits up.

We had a lovely Christmas and were very fortunate with the location as this was one of only a few resorts that had snow (they ended up bussing people over from other resorts because of poor conditions). The weather was actually lovely. This was our first time skiing in Tignes, and in France as a whole (have previously skied Andorra, USA).
It’s a lovely and friendly place. There isn’t much by way of après ski but as I was here with my son and not a group of friends, après wasn’t a bit part of why we went. We didn’t have any trouble with queuing or busy pistes and the people we met were all very nice. For the range of slopes you get, the Tignes and Val d’Isere area are fantastic. We’d definitely go back here.

SNO moved us to Tignes from Chamonix because the snow was lacking at the beginning of the season. Weather wise, the first couple of days weren’t so great, but towards the end it was brilliant - we still got to ski every day which is the main thing (though there’s a lot going on in Tignes anyway even if you’re not skiing). I was taking lessons to improve, Carolyn @ ESF was great. We skied over to Val d’Isere and spent some time there, we found some really nice places to eat. Would definitely ski here again although I'm keen to try some other resorts first!

I spent new year in Tignes 2011/12 and it was one of the best new years I've ever had. First of all the snow was incredible. I returned the next Feb and the snow was again fantastic. It's a high resort so it usually guarantees decent snow, it's one of my favourites when it comes to good powder and not being too cut up or slushy. New Years had a festival like party on Le Lac just up the road (I stayed in Val Claret in some self catering apartments practically on the snow) and a short walk away there was live music, a massive crowd rivaling glastonbury and a ridiculously good atmosphere. Apres... there was a tex mex place called daffy's cafe which did great (hangover) food and almost everywhere offers a meat fondue which is something you have to try if you love steak! Go to Drop Zone Bar in Val Claret for a few drinks before heading to one of the nightclubs in Tignes. Blue Girl has a small dance floor and great drinks deals, including an outside area and cheesy music which is right up my street. If it's not up your street then head to Melting Pot which has a downstairs area that plays drum and bass and other, probably cooler, music and lots of shots!

I can understand the appeal to young people like me who want to go hard on and off the slopes, but for a family holiday I don’t think it’s as good. The ski area was nice and there was plenty to keep me occupied. The snow was still quite good even late in the season, and there was plenty of sun. I went off-piste during my private ski lesson which was great – I loved the untouched powder! When we stayed (around Easter) it was the British University Ski Club’s big trip – avoid that like the plague as the resort was trashed and they were so loud… As we stayed in a self-catered apartment we got to eat in some lovely restaurants including one (the name escapes me) which was very homely and had a teddy bear theme! I’m sure it would be very nice to go back and get a positive experience, although there are lots of resorts which cater better to families for us to try first.

Tignes is a high resort at 2100m meaning it is a great choice for early and late season skiing- went over the New Year period and had glorious sunny weather most days with excellent snow cover.
In terms of Après we found Saloon Bar great for cheap drinks deals and happy hour was always busy with tourists and Drop Zone had good live music and is right on the slopes so you can ski to your beer! Later on we partied in the Melting Pot which is a small underground nightclub that plays chart and cheesy tunes (gets incredibly hot, hence the name) but has a decent bar that serves very generous measurings of vodka as well as staying open till 4am. Blue Girl is worth a try as the drinks are cheap, we loved the pink bottled flugel shots and there’s a pole to try your skills out on, but it is full of some sleazy locals so watch out! If you are happy to take a bus to Le Lac the nightlife here is great: Underground has unreal happy hour deals, don’t miss Sunday Shot Night at Alpaka and Jacks Club that plays the cheesiest tunes but we loved it! You have to try Loop Bar in Le Lac (awesome sun terrace, very lively during après) which serves amazing burgers and as students we were on a budget so we loved Pizza 2000 and Evo2 Café in Val Claret for cheap, filling meals. For epic views and delicious, good-value food Panoramic at the top of the funicular is the best place, with a huge sun-trap terrace and outdoor snack bar as well as a great self-service selection inside. Huge ski area and awesome to have all of Val D’isere to explore as part of the Espace Killy ski pass, as well as the famous Folie Douce which we hit every afternoon without fail- electric atmosphere with dancers on the roofs, blaring house and dance music, but be warned the drinks are expensive (8 euros for a vin chaud or beer). Skiing wise it is ideal for intermediates with the vast majority of runs being blues or reds but the off-piste was also unreal (Espace Killy is famous for it), we spent a day with Ultimate Snowsports who were English-speaking and really fun and helpful guides. For experienced skiers the Grand Motte Glacier is not only breath-taking but challenging and varied skiing and you can ski long reds, blues or blacks all the way back to the resort. Many of Tignes’ blacks are not piste-bashed which makes them trickier, our favourite was the steep ‘Paquerettes’ but be warned its very mogully as is the equally awesome and long ‘Sache’- Tigne is great for advanced skiers as it has so much off-piste on offer as well as tough itinerary runs. For those who prefer the blues out favourites were ‘anemone’ and the very long ‘prariond’ and ’vallon’. We went second week of January when the schools had gone back and there were no queues with the pistes being fairly empty, although it got busier with French families over the weekend.

Tignes is really cool, I’ve been a few times – there’s so much skiing and it has a high altitude which means you have so much better snow.
There was loads of stuff happening at the ski resort at Christmas – all the ski instructors did a torch light procession down the mountain and they had Father Christmas coming in. There was also ice sculptures in the town and other stuff to do, so it was really fun.

Had a great time here, some really good nights out. I spent quite a lot of time in the park and now I’m a lot better at freestyle. We went to the Folie Douce which is great but it’s a bit weird, it’s not skiing but it’s not a night out, it’s kind of a weird in-between.

Tignes is quite a modern resort, it hasn’t got the infrastructure of an old place like Chamonix but it has everything you need – shops, restaurants and bars. The mountain restaurants are fantastic and there are a number of different ones. In Tignes, the one at the top of the funicular is stunning, a proper restaurant with sofas and everything. Other ones will have entertainment up there which is good fun. You can even get the bus to Val d’Isere if you want to go there for the nightlife. There was snow on every piste and it was rather warm – 15 degrees – with blue skies every day. We had 2 foot coming down on the last day which was amazing. We get the whole area pass but to be honest you could just get the local one, unless you’re an expert skier you’d probably have enough.

This was the first time we had been to Tignes, a lot of friends who had been before recommended it to us as being great for late season... and it was absolutely spot on. We had brilliant snow in the mornings but because the temperatures were mid to late teens, by the time the afternoon came along it meant the snow got quite slushy.
If you’re a skier, it’s perfect as it’s a ski resort but it’s not ideal for non skiers as there isn’t too much else to occupy them.
I’m a bit of a beginner and found some slopes that were easy to get to on the lifts. The boys had morning lessons with the French ski school (who were great) and in the afternoons we did our own thing.
We ate out every other night and a couple of the restaurants were mediocre, but one or two on the other side of the village were very good.
Perfect location, can’t knock it – a million out of 5!

Tignes is a big bowl so everything ends up in the middle, whereas Val d’Isere is a valley so if you end up at one end, you have to go all the way over to get back. I’ve been to quite a few ski resorts and have returned to Tignes over 10 times now... and had great fun every time I’ve been. The snowboarding is awesome! This year it was so good we spent most of the time in the pub but the snow was perfect, it couldn’t have been better. Tignes has just enough clubs and pubs – the Loop’s the pub if you’re 18-30.

I thought I’d enjoy Val d’Isere more than Tignes, we spent a day over there but whilst it’s got slightly more things happening, when you see the extent of the bars and restaurants in Tignes, Tignes is more than adequate. This is certainly somewhere I’d return to. The Espace Killy area is an awesome place, the whole set up is phenomenal and 10 times bigger than I ever thought it would be.
We were fortunate with the conditions even though it was the end of March. On the night we arrived there, about 1m of snow had fallen and it lasted the whole week (some areas lower down started to get very slightly slushy on the last day but otherwise it was fine).

The snow was good while we were there (early March). Tignes is very good. In terms of eating out, everywhere is nice for lunch, there is so much competition so the restaurants have to be good. Obviously the higher up the mountain the more expensive it gets, as every experienced skier knows. My tip for Tignes is to fly into Chambery – it’s a shorter transfer, only about 2 hours. I also recommend a Sunday transfer, as on Saturday you get much more traffic.
Ski Republic are a good local ski hire company – we pre-booked this along with our holiday. They were very helpful and they are good value.

I was using skins and going up and over the back for off piste, the conditions were fantastic and I had blue skies every day – it was pretty quiet too with not too many people. If you haven’t skied Tignes before, definitely get the full Espace Killy pass and head over to the other glacier, more so than the Grand Motte as you get quite a lot of queuing for the train over there.

I picked France as it has better snow and Tignes because we did a late booking. My daughter got tired quite quickly so we didn’t do as much skiing as I would have liked - we went to the swimming pool every day, the good thing about the lift pass is that you get free access to the pool.

I’ve skied Tignes before and know the area well. The snow was absolutely lovely even though it was the beginning of the season, you can’t argue with the conditions when you go somewhere nice and high. If it’s open, the black Sache run in the last sector coming into Breviere is pretty serious if you’re that way inclined – the opening section is really fun. You’ve got to go over to Val and get right to the top as the valley is usually absolutely empty and the snow at the top is spot on – there are some really nice cruisey reds and blues. There’s also an excellent run down the left hand side of the Val glacier looking down on the mountain.

We really enjoyed Tignes, there’s some great skiing and we had excellent snow. Our family are intermediate to advanced skiers and there was no shortage of runs.
If you’re staying over New Years, they have an enormous New Year party over by the lake – we have young kids so didn’t go along and instead went out for dinner. We were at the other end of the resort and the only way you could tell anything was happening was from the lights in the distance, it doesn’t take over the whole resort at all and we had a lovely evening. The best thing about the party happening is that it means you have the best skiing ever on New Year’s day, as everyone is still in bed - we had the piste to ourselves!
If anyone is planning to get new ski boots, don’t buy them before you go. There’s an absolutely brilliant ski shop in the centre of town (I think it’s a Skimum one) where the young guy who owns the shop does a fantastic job and moulds the boots really well - the price is the same as you’d pay outside the resort.

Tignes was amazing this year. We had superb snow. I think I liked it more than my wife did, she isn’t as adventurous as me and I think she found it a bit difficult – she’s more cautious. It’s quite a challenging resort, I would recommend it more for experienced skiers (especially the area around where we were staying in Lavachet). There are some nice black runs. I liked ‘the Sash’ which leads down into a pretty valley with some good bars and restaurants where you can sit outside in the sun. That black has some good blue runs running parallel to it as well. My wife would go on these while I went down the black.
The other thing my wife didn’t really like about Tignes, because she wasn’t really doing any of the black runs, were the ‘flat bits’. There were lots of very flat parts so it didn’t feel like the different areas were very well linked. I also felt it was a bit of a waste of money getting the whole Espace Killy area pass – it was a bit of a mission to get over to Val d’Isere from where we were based, and to get down to the town there was only a choice of a black run, La Fas, and a blue run. Both runs were horrible, but the black one was better because the blue was like a half-pipe, it wasn’t very wide and it was full of people so you couldn’t stop at all, and it was difficult for a blue. Don’t bother going over to Val d’Isere in my opinion, I didn’t think much of the skiing around there. I felt the same about La Plagne and Les Arcs when I went there – there isn’t much point going all the way over to Les Arcs from La Plagne, it’s too far away.

The ski area is huge and you have plenty of slopes on the whole Espace Killy. It’s quite high so you’re guaranteed good conditions. It has plenty of variety for different abilities, I’m an intermediate and there was plenty for me but we were also with lots of learners who had lots of nice blues etc.

We’ve skied here in January and March and always had plenty of snow. We’re experienced skiers and love having such a vast area to explore but it’s also good for beginners. My son’s wife was learning to ski and enjoyed it as the runs aren’t too difficult, everything is quite wide open and safe. The areas by the hotels that you start off on are also really nice.
I can’t fault the restaurants, they’re a bit expensive but they have a captive audience I suppose and they’re not open all year.

I’ve skied Tignes in the past from Val, it’s a very good resort.
It was really cold in January but there was plenty of snow.
In terms of which area to stay in, Val Claret is definitely the best.

This was my first time in Tignes. As a group of boarders in our early 30’s, we all had really high expectations but it turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. We felt too old for it, which wasn’t great, everyone there was quite studenty and partying about. We were a bit disappointed with the snowboarding as the runs weren’t really long enough, it was a bit of a trade off between how long you actually spend on the run and how long you spent getting on and off the lifts.

I love Tignes - we skied here as a big group and really enjoyed it. We would definitely recommend it to other groups.
I’m a boarder and the area is great for snowboarding, I’ve been doing it for quite a few years so I’m not a beginner or an expert but the area was perfect for me.
There was one nice bar where we went most of the time, so didn’t end up seeing much else of the après ski. It had live music and nice beer.
There are also some really good little snack restaurants dotted around with things like burritos for après ski snacks.

Tignes is great for skiers at all levels with its high altitude and open space, snowboarders will too enjoy the 2000 meters of vertical decent. There are easily accessible runs for beginners at Le Lac and Lavachet with free lifts and multiple schools including snowboard schools, or if you prefer a one on one lesson there are a choice of independent instructors you can take advantage off. For intermediates that are more confident there are numerous blues and red runs to keep you challenged throughout your trip. And for those advance skiers and snowboarders there is endless space and tons of Off-Piste routes to enjoy. All this in surrounded by the stunning mountain ranges of the Alps.

Tignes offers great skiing conditions and door-to-door skiing and being linked to Val D’Isere, gives you the best of both resorts by being able to ski between the two. This resort is great for budget travellers as its the more affordable half of the Espace Killy and also has guaranteed snow making for great skiing - in fact its Tignes that has the big glacier area where they often open lifts in November! This resort is ideal for intermediate to advanced skiers and those who love experiencing the après ski should take advantage of the happy hour at the Loop after a hard day on the slopes.

Here is a review of Tignes for you. Have to admit this is one of the best skiing experiences. Love it there. 1) Scotty’s Bar was excellent in Lavachet. A bit of a party bar with live sport, a fantastic sun terrace and regular offers on cocktails. 2) I am sure we ate at La Caleche – again a traditional French mountain restaurant with Raceltte, Tartiflette etc. Not overly expensive however worth booking for an evening meal. 3) Face – a red run back to Val Claret is fantastic. Val Claret a good place to stop for lunch, plenty of restaurants and bars. 4) We stayed in Tignes Le Lavachet at the Chalet Rosset. An excellent fully catered chalet from Ski Olympic. As always fantastic staff and food. Rosset is a step from piste and right next to the main Aeroski life which will allow you to access the whole mountain. Areoski is a bubble therefore if you are like me and prefer chair lifts, you can easily get down to the Lavachet lift from Chalet Rosset. One thing to note is that the run back to Le Lac is a black, this full of moguls at the top and can be hard going at the end of the day once cut up. Tignes is linked brilliantly well with Val D’Isere. Whilst the skiing is great overall, l/we certainly prefer the Tignes side. Saying that the Funicular in Val D’Isere is not be missed. Almost like a vertical trip on the Underground. Make sure you get up on the glacier at the top of the Grande Motte lift. Incredible views. If you have good snow and are early in the season make sure you also ski Myosotis, a brilliant red down to the Aiguille Rouge lift, for incredible views of the dam. Finally if you stay at Lavachet or Le Lac, walking across the frozen lake is good fun to Val Claret. Beware of husky sledges and crazy joggers.

The infamous, high altitude snow paradise, suitable for beginners to advanced skiers. Tignes boasts a vast amount of space; this ski heaven will continue to astonish you. With all year round guaranteed ski time it continues to appeal to the masses. The Espace Killy is world renowned for its superb slopes, scenic views and over 300km of marked runs. Great for groups, families, off-piste snowboarding and skiing and also lots to do for any non-skiers in your group (ice diving anyone?).

Tignes is a fantastic place to head to for almost any holiday. We found it slightly cheaper than Val d’Isere, so would be perfect for those with less cash to splash. We also found that despite it being cheaper, there was more going on and a much better vibe than in the neighbouring town, with the night life providing more than enough to stay entertained. Blue Girl and Melting Pot were two great clubs that opened until 4am, which meant that you are hit by an intense lack of sleep on the return journey home. Despite this, however late these clubs are open until, there is no reason to not be up for first lift, with the extensive ski area offering a variety of terrain. There aren’t many pisted runs for expert skiers, as most of the black runs have become trails and aren’t groomed. However, if you manage to get up to la Face early when it’s still perfectly groomed, make sure you head straight down it for a beautiful, fast, leg-burner.

Whether you like to hit the clubs and party or just have a drink at a quite bar, Tignes is the place for you. With a vivacious nightlife Tignes certainly wont disappoint. The Villages in Tignes have a varied choice of restaurants, you will never fail to be satisfied. You could have a try with ‘Sat Suki de Tignes’ (Tignes Chinese, Indian & Asian food restaurant, or if you prefer a more traditional taste close to home you could try Le Bouchen Montagnard which serves traditional European and Good For: o Groups o Families o Off-Piste o Non- Skiers American cuisine which also has a wine bar if you prefer to just have a drink within a nice atmosphere. With 57 bars and 4 Clubs there is a place for everyone’s taste. You could head over to the TC’s Bar Le Lavachet, which is famous for its ‘night of 1000 shots’. If you prefer a more peaceful night you could head over to the Le Loop Bar where you can dine while watching the picturesque view of the slops. If that’s not what you are after you could try Le Brasero where you could sit back with your group of friends and listen to live music while having a drink. Or if you prefer some live blues music head over to Le Caveau bar/restaurant for the evening entertainment. With all this said there are various activities and attractions for the nonskiers from dog sledding to ice diving and horse riding. With the opening of a New Free Bike Park on the 29th June! 2013 you can be some of the first to enjoy the unlimited trails and lifts! Even the children will be entertained with the various child sledding runs. For those who rather take a subtle approach to their entertainment, you can browse the local museum and shops. It goes without saying that Tignes will not fail to entertain you on and of the slopes.

Tignes Ski resort is set in the beautiful Espace Killy which it shares with Val d’isere with over 300km of pistes. The world renowned Espace Killy named after skier and triple Olympic Gold medallist Jean-Claude Killy. The Grande Motte Glacier allows the resort to stay open all year round; with five different villages along with the current rebuilt of Tignes 2100 it has plenty to offer and more. Tignes is one of the best in the world for its lift service and piste runs, with the convenience of lift systems straight to your doorstep. There is a lot to see and do with 150km of slopes. Tignes-Le-Lac is the center of the resort and is split into two sub resorts: Le Rosset and Le Bec-Rouge with Val Claret just 2km from the valley. All villages are filled with shops, restaurants and bars to keep you entertained, whether you stay for a week or a winter.

My favourite! Wide, uncrowded reds give intermediate skiers and boarders the confidence to increase their speed and decrease the breadth of their turns. I chickened out of the glacier as it looked a little icy nearing the end of the day, but next time, you’re mine red glacier run! (probably not gonna be confident enough for the black…) Ski Tranquille areas for plenty of green runs for those just starting out. Linked with Val d’Isere this is a resort with never-ending opportunities for skiers and boarders of all levels. Open for summer skiing too!

Many people visit Tignes for the great links to Val d’isere and snowsure glacier, but it has a really cool terrain park as well. Tignes has amazing powder skiing and it also hosts the X games, which attracts some of the biggest names in freestyle skiing and snowboarding, to lay down their best tricks. The resort is definitely one for serious skiers that are looking to get first lifts and come down when the light is fading, however the après ski is also in place for the really hardcore people that can go out all night and then drag themselves out of bed early in the morning… and that pretty much describes my own approach to a ski trip!

The best thing about the resort for me was the altitude. Making a snow sure holiday with fresh snow throughout was worth the transfer time. Also the amount of skiable area is massive especially if you have the full area pass. The off piste is also excellent. Thanks for a good Holliday!
