Two hours drive from Toulouse Airport (TLS), Baqueira Beret works well if you want to squeeze a mix of sun, snow and sangria into your time away. The ski area has plenty to entertain over a short break, with 151km of pistes including oodles of cruisey beginner and intermediate runs. There are testing couloirs and off piste trails for experts, and you’ll also find a cracking snow park above Beret.
Most of the locals don’t start skiing until late morning: get up early and you can make the most of your time away with non-existent lift queues and almost empty slopes, which can be hard to find in the bigger European resorts. In fact even when the locals are skiing later on, it still feels gloriously quiet in these parts. Off the slopes, soak up the Catalan and French influences on food and culture, watching the world go by with a bottle of San Miguel and tucking into late night tapas and vino at Tredòs.
A lot of the weekend and midweek break accommodation in BB comes in the form of half board hotels, which keep things simple by including breakfasts and suppers in the overall cost. You won’t have to spend time hunting for a restaurant with a table each night, and instead can enjoy meals served moments from your bedroom.
