The classic catered ski chalet isn’t that big in Bulgaria, where apartments and hotels take centre stage. But there’s always an exception to the rule, with some independent companies transforming mountain homes into fantastic catered chalets.

Otherwise, if traditional chalet architecture has you hooked, look out for log cabins and timber-framed villas for chalet-like accommodation. These mostly come self-catered – but that’s great for getting out and trying traditional Bulgarian eats around your resort. Sometimes, you can upgrade to Half Board to have meals included as you would with a traditional chalet holiday.

Generally Bulgarian chalets, cabins and villas are humble abodes with humbler price tags, but at the top end of the scale you’ll find properties with private saunas for a warm welcome home from the slopes. For a truly first-class stay, Bulgaria’s 4 and 5-star spa hotels know just what weary skiers need, with all manner of wellness facilities. Opt for a suite and you’ve got space to stretch out – not quite a chalet, but certainly luxurious (and a fraction of what you’d spend on this kind of accommodation in France or Switzerland).

Hotels tend to hog the best slope-side spots in Bulgaria – some at the base of the lifts or nursery area, others plonked right on the piste. More chalet-like accommodation can often be found tucked snugly away in the forests, with a shuttle service to whisk you to the ski area each morning. Chalets a short walk or ski from the nearest piste are Bulgarian resort gold dust – well worth snapping up if they’re available!
