Italian schools don’t actually have a half-term break, which is why La Villa is usually pretty quiet in February. Teachers can escape daily life for a relaxing week on the Dolomites and if you’re here as a family, the kids will love tearing up the easy slopes in Alta Badia – there’s always the wider Superski area for more adventurous excursions. If you like a challenge, you’ll find plenty of tough red runs (the one from Santa Croce is an absolute must-ski) and there’s always the terrifying Gran Risa piste. La Villa is well-placed for easy access to the Sella Ronda circuit via Corvara – well worth setting aside a day for intermediates and above.
If you’re lucky, half-term might coincide with the Italian festival season, which means you may get to see some celebrations – there’s been horse-sled racing and parades in the past. If not, you’ll still find the food something to celebrate. It’s definitely a step up from school dinners and there’s a lot of choice for fussy eaters, plus there won’t be any complaints about portion sizes. Families will love the pizza at La Bercia or you could head to Corvara for Fornella, this is where you can also treat yourself to Michelin star dining at La Stua de Michil, if you’re celebrating something special.
Mother Nature is usually good to the Dolomites in February and past years have seen plenty of the white stuff. Even better, the artificial snow cover is extensive, with 392 snow-cannons on 110 km of the piste in Alta Badia.
