Santa’s true home is as festive as it gets when it comes to Christmas, which is why this time of year is perfect for the Lapland experience.
Levi usually has plenty of opportunities to meet the man himself, whether it’s at Rovaniemi’s Santa Park or at his cosy grotto in the woods. In a lot of cases, you can arrange for your family to meet Santa privately, which is absolutely magical for little ones! Reindeer rides are also a must at this time of year and are beautiful whatever the weather – be it snowing for a really ‘Winter Wonderland’ feel or clear skies for your best chances of spotting the Northern Lights. Back in the village, sledges can be hired at Zero Point and are great fun for all ages as well as being a fabulous way to pull children around if they get tired. To make things even more festive, there’s usually a Christmas market, complete with pretty fairy-lit stalls, Lappish souvenirs and bubbling cauldrons of delicious glögi.
As far as the weather goes, prepare for some very chilly conditions as temperatures tend to average around -10°C during Finland’s ‘Deep Winter’ season. Insulating suits are often available to hire (ask us if we can include this in your booking) which do a great job of keeping children toasty! The crisp arctic air also helps make things feel a little warmer – not to mention it’s a great recipe for fabulous snow. If you’ve put skiing on your Christmas list, plenty of tree-lined runs all over the fell provide shelter during any whiteouts and you can make the most of the sunshine on the slopes towards Etelärinteet.
