Rather than a purpose built ski resort, this is an old lake town with a couple of good ski areas within 45-90 minutes drive away. If you fancy mixing your week with ski days and days exploring the quiet lake and towns, this is a great option.

Early season snow, between December and January, is usually best in this part of Austria, as the white stuff tends to mellow by Easter. As spring hits the valley, various activities like the St. Gilgen gondola, Lake Wolfgangsee ferries and Schafberg steam train start up again ensuring there’s plenty to do if the snow is poor.

The ancient town is gorgeous and a romantic spot for couples. For families, there are plenty of activities to couple with the skiing. The Abarena Theme Park has indoor and outdoor facilities so there’s something on whatever the weather. Further afield is the Dachstein glacier, where you’ll find a suspension bridge spanning two of the mountain’s peaks as well as an expansive ice cave packed with amazing frozen sculptures.
