We love Avoriaz for short breaks. It takes a touch more time to get to than some of the other Portes du Soleil resorts but even then, it’s still under 2 hours from Geneva airport and about 2 hours from Chambery – which is super compared to other resorts in France. The resort more than makes up for time spent on transfers by being completely ski in, ski out, saving you from having to hike about in ski boots or bundle onto busy buses each morning. Better yet, it has some of the highest pistes in the region, making this your best bet in the Portes du Soleil for good snow conditions during your time away.
Speaking of the Portes du Soleil, this international ski area’s 650km of pistes gives you more than enough to explore during your short break, whether you’re crossing the border to Switzerland, visiting Morzine or spending all day on Avoriaz’s famously good terrain parks.
Most of the short break accommodation in Avoriaz is catered chalets, which include breakfasts, afternoon tea and cake as well as suppers with wine – having your main meals covered with hosts in charge of the housework keeps the whole break hassle free, saving you from having to scout out local eateries and budget for them.
To make your time in resort run even more smoothly, order your ski or snowboard equipment from a shop near where you’re staying and it’ll be ready and waiting for you when you arrive. Lift passes can be booked in advance too, as well as lessons, guiding and other local services.
