You won’t have to ponder the possibility of a white Christmas in the USA Ski resorts – it’ll be just like the ones in the movies... Whether you’re carolling with the cowboys in Steamboat and Jackson Hole, partying with the A-Listers in Aspen or simply soaking up the holiday season combined with some of the world’s best skiing, you’ll struggle not to get caught up with that infectious festive cheer.
Best American ski resorts at Christmas for:
It’s not just any week on the mountains when you’re staying in a chalet at Christmas. You’ll usually come home to the scent of mulled wine, minced pies and Christmas cake after a day on the snow – make sure you save room for a celebration breakfast and Christmas dinner with all the trimmings on the day itself. In some chalets you’re given your own Christmas tree and if children are staying, you might just have a visit from Santa himself...
Chalet Founders Cabin is a lovely log cabin in family favourite Winter Park. Sleeping up to 10 in 4 bedrooms, it’s moments from the town centre and a ski bus stops right outside, taking you to Winter Park’s snow sure ski area. Over in Breck, Chalet Victoria also has a useful location slap bang in the middle of the town - the local churches are less than 5 minutes walk if you fancy a carol service, and various bars and restaurants (we love Ollie’s Pub & Grub and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.) are just down the road. To top it off, the chalet’s Victorian style architecture is in keeping with the rest of the town which adds to that traditional Christmassy feel. It’s not just Chalet Timberline’s location in Vail that gives it a real winter wonderland setting – you’ll find it cosily hidden amongst snow covered pines and can step in from the cold outdoors to a classic alpine interior. With 5 rooms sleeping up to 11, it’s ideal if you’ve got a group of a similar size (if you book it up soon enough you can enjoy the property to yourselves).
You’ll find a wide variety of hotels in the USA resorts from plush 5 star properties fit for a king to cosy family-run lodgings where you can really get to know the locals. If the snowy mountain scenery doesn’t make you feel festive enough, look out for Christmas parties, events and banquets run by a number of hotels – you sometimes have to book these in advance but they’re well worth it!
For a luxury Christmas getaway, book into the legendary Four Seasons in Vail – wake up on Christmas day in one of its ritzy rooms and find out if they’re still offering a ski concierge service (you won’t even have to carry your skis to the lift!). A cup of legendary hot chocolate in their Fireside Lounge is a must for warming up in the afternoon. Hearthstone House is in a prime position for Aspen’s après ski, right in the town centre and less than a 5 minute walk from Eric’s bar and the exclusive Caribou club (don’t be surprised if you bump into the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Julia Roberts this Christmas). One of our favourite hotels for families is the Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge – not only are the facilities and services really child friendly, it’s ski in / ski out which keeps things easy for little legs. Also positioned for doorstep skiing is the Snow King Resort Hotel in Jackson Hole and if you want to ski some of the very best conditions that America has to offer, check out Winter Park where one of our favourite places to stay is the Vintage Resort Hotel.
Keep Christmas personal and just the way you like it by opting for a self-catering holiday. Don’t think of the condos in America along the same lines as the apartments in Europe – these tend to be much roomier with bigger, better amenities (think proper kitchens, log fires, WiFi, hot tubs, swimming pools and more) which makes it no surprise that they’re so popular at Christmas.
Silverado Lodge is a set of modern, spacious condos at the foot of Canyons – one of the Park City resorts. Getting around is really easy if you’re staying here as bus services take you to Park City town (where you’ll find shops, bars and restaurants) and local ski resorts. Known as one of Colorado’s best options for value-for-money luxury, the Zephyr Mountain Lodge in Winter Park has some lovely condo-suites. Not only are the condos nice and roomy for a cosy Christmas with friends and family, they also have easy access to the nearby shops, bars and restaurants which makes self-catering an absolute breeze. For those who like to knock up a hearty breakfast and get straight out on to the slopes, ski in / ski out accommodation like the Crestwood Condos are fantastic. These will have you gliding down the Snowmass Mountain as you step out the door. You can also ski to the door of Breck’s Pine Ridge Condos which are near the resort centre as well as being at the foot of the slopes. The biggest East Vail Condos have 3 bedrooms and sleep up to 8 – perfect for groups who want to enjoy their own space in a quiet location.
