Brimming with traditional Austrian charm but with all the conveniences of a modern resort, St Anton's vast, high altitude ski area and vibrant atmosphere make it truly world class. It's one of the major international destinations that everyone must visit at least once (and is likely to return to frequently thereafter).

Two minutes from the train station and less than an hour's drive from Innsbruck airport, it's a conveniently accessible resort. The main village is traffic free and stretches for about 1km - dotted with hotels, restaurants, bars and shops to suit a wide range of tastes and budgets.

The long tradition of skiing stems in no small part from the St Anton area. To the amusement of locals, the parish priest in Lech first strapped on a couple of planks in 1895, starting a trend that has held ever since.

The competitive side of skiing is encouraged here, where the first ever ski race took place in 1904. Since the famous Arlberg-Kandahar Race in 1928 it has hosted various championships including the 2001 World Cup. Anyone can participate in the famous White Thrill race, which includes a 9km decent from Valluga. Children aren’t left out either - the ski schools organise weekly races and a slalom competition.

The Arlberg lift pass grants access to an extensive 280km of marked trails, not to mention 180km of fantastic off-piste. 84 lifts, easily accessed from the village transport over 125,000 per hour all over the Arlberg linked domain, which covers St.Anton as well as Pettneu, St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech, Zürs and Klösterle (aka Sonnenkopf). All areas are connected by an efficient (and free) shuttle bus.

With quality pistes, exhilarating powder, world-famous après ski and off-slope activities galore, St Anton has pretty much everything - it's even got a starring role in British Cinema - as the setting of rom-com 'Chalet Girl'.

The nearest airport to St Anton is Munich / München at 250 km or about 3 hours by car.

It's often said that if you learn to ski or snowboard here, you're likely to find any other resort an utter breeze... Just don't do a Bridget Jones (her memorable descent in 'Edge of Reason' took place on one of the more challenging Arlberg runs) and make sure to take advantage of the excellent tuition on offer. Thanks to local legend Hannes Schneider, St Anton opened the first ski school in 1921. The Skischule Arlberg continues to provide excellent tuition today, so beginners are in good hands. There's a nursery slope at Nasserein as well as some beginner runs at Gampen. Once your confidence is building, your instructor will direct you to the easiest runs in the area. There are some nice ones in Kapall for snowploughing and the Osthang is a lovely, wide blue.

Where to eat in St Anton and on the mountain

Museum Restaurant It’s no surprise this is at the top on many a skier’s list of places to eat in St Anton. This lovely alpine chalet dates back to 1912 and has since starred in cinema hit ‘Chalet Girl’. Learn more about the area in the Museum’s showrooms on the first floor before you enjoy some of St Anton’s best food by the fireplace in the authentic setting of their lovely restaurant. The owners usually put on a special menu to celebrate Christmas and New year if you’re planning on visiting St Anton at this time of year and fancy doing something special.

Amandine Rustling up delicious dishes, taking care of the washing up, and some even providing ski tours and chauffeuring, come the end of the week it’s impossibly hard to part with an Amandine private chef. The key to their success is finding you your perfect match –whether you’d like cuisine with Michelin precision, internationally-influenced fare or hearty cottage pies and club sarnies. Totally flexible, they can even ship someone to man the kitchen for just an evening if you want to make a blow-out chalet celebration extra special.

Tyrone Power With 10 years of experience pleasing palates around the world (including for the discerning owner of one of Monaco’s super yachts), Tyrone Power and his skilled team have the expertise to make your chalet catering the highlight of your week. Procure one of them to join you in the Alps, and work together to create the bespoke menu of a lifetime - with fabulous untried flavours (ever tasted a mizuna leaf?) and hearty home favourites (gooseberry crumble, don't mind if we do...).

This was our first time in St Anton and it was a lovely town; not a purpose built resort like you get in France, which have great skiing but horrible buildings, but a classic Austrian town. The resort is relaxed and we found some bars with live music and a good range of entertainment for both us and our sons. ... + more

Great! This was the first time we’d been to Austria as we always do France. Eating out and bars definitely seemed cheaper, and everyone was generally more polite. We always ski at half term when France has huge queues to get to the lifts, but here it was so much quieter, you wouldn’t have known it was half te... + more

Our experience of St Anton was marred slightly by the lack of snow in the beginning of April, but if I picture it with a good coverage, I think it would be incredible. You need to be a fearless skier to enjoy the area, if you were to take a nervous skier here you’d put them off for life. I wouldn’t take a... + more

It’s a great resort. I’m not sure it’s beginner friendly, it was fine for us as we are experienced skiers but for our children it was quite difficult. Pretty good restaurants up on the piste and nice runs, though from a snowboarder’s perspective it’s more skier friendly in terms of how the runs are set up. One piece of advice – there’s a ski lift that goes up to the other half of the resort where there’s a snow park, it’s worth checking it out early on ... + more
