Mürren really has everything you could want for Christmas – snow lined pedestrian streets, gorgeous mountain scenery, charming alpine huts, tasteful decorations… it’s like the place was designed for the perfect Christmas holiday! Staying here you’ll feel like you’ve escaped to another world, and there’s something quite magical about the fact that you have to take the old-fashioned cog-railway up the mountain to get here.

We particularly love the village tradition of turning the local shops and houses into an advent calendar. The participating locals decorate one of their windows so that it looks like a calendar window for one of the days in December. When their day comes around the locals open their doors to everyone, residents and guests alike, and offer a glass of glühwein and Christmas biscuits. Then after the 24th there is a guided walk through town which visits all 24 windows – a really lovely way to meet some local mountain folk. Usually you can also take part in another Christmas walk on December 23rd or 24th to a large pine tree above the village where there is a Christmas story reading and carol singing. Visitors drink a glass of glühwein (they love their glühwein here), light a candle and admire the village in the snow from above.
