St. Moritz is a lot of fun over New Years – it’s the time to see and be seen strutting your stuff in one of the classy bars and clubs. Look out for celebrities such as Sting, Hugh Grant, and Kate Moss, or even royalty while you sip champagne in the popular King’s Club. There are some cosy pubs too if you need to unwind – Bobby’s is an English themed pub with live sport and a pool table. Bardutt’s Palace traditionally holds a special event over New Year’s Eve (if you can afford tickets), where a man in a cape holding a pig wanders the party, and visitors can touch the pig for good fortune in the coming year. The ski conditions are usually excellent in the Engadin area at this time of year as well, so you can really make the most of the 4 sectors, even the lower areas.
Over in Klosters there is another quirky pig themed event… this pig obsession comes down to the fact that pigs in Switzerland are an emblem of good luck. The village holds an annual pig race with specially trained piglets and spectators can bet on which pig will be crowning champion. The race makes for an unusual but entertaining tradition. Previous years have also seen firework displays in both Davos and Klosters too. Again, the skiing is often in its prime over New Years in Davos/Klosters, and so it’s a great time to make the most of the resort’s huge 320km ski area.
