I absolutely loved Solden. Less well known than St Anton or Mayrhofen but the après here is just as raucous and in April there is the fantastic Electric Mountain Festival to go with the fun spring skiing. Solden is a short transfer from the airport but incredibly snow-sure with 2 huge glaciers and I loved the extra-wide, open, well-groomed runs. You can tell the off-piste here would be abundant and high quality on a powder day too, so there’s something here for all abilities. The village has a fun atmosphere and there is a great choice of bars and restaurants - Schirmbar was a favourite of ours for ski boot après and, for the night owls, Katapult Club was the place to head for after-hours partying.

This was my first holiday in Solden. It’s a nice resort but I’ve never been to a resort before whereby the slopes are such that when people are skiing on them, it cuts the slopes up and makes them into moguls. The bottom pistes were really really suffering in the middle of March so it was hard to ski down – it was porridge wherever there was snow and some areas the snow had disappeared entirely. High up was amazing as you could ski up on the glacier. It was quite easy to get around and in terms of labeling of the pistes, there wasn’t anywhere labelled lower than it actually was, so you weren’t ending up on any reds and thinking it was more like a black. The actual resort has shops if you want to do clothes shopping, we ate out one evening in a really nice restaurant and there’s lots of bars and nightlife although that’s not really my kind of thing.

We hadn’t been to Solden but I had been to Obergurgl so I knew where it was and knew the extent of the skiing there. It had very good skiing for all the different ranges we had there. One of our group was a complete beginner and the rest had been skiing for donkey’s years. It’s a great place and I would definitely go there again. The New Year celebrations weren’t as much as we’ve had in other resorts, there was a firework do which lasted for about 5 bangs and was over – having been to Tignes where the celebrations go on for ages this seemed like hardly anything!

Solden is pretty dependable snow wise and there aren’t many Brits which can be a good thing! I wouldn’t say this was particularly a place for beginners, you’d be OK if you were a very early beginner on the nursery slopes but for the next stage up it would probably be more difficult.
There’s a new restaurant right at the top of the glacier that’s part of an ultra modern complex. The après ski is really good fun – that’s what Solden is all about.
