We had a fantastic time and really enjoyed Hinterglemm, it was our first time skiing in Austria having previously skied in French resorts like Meribel, Courchevel, La Plagne… We enjoyed the easy access to the slopes and the overall network – it was easy to get to places and the lifts were a lot better than we’ve experienced before. We didn’t have to queue as much, and it wasn’t as expensive on the slopes. The quality of food on the slopes and off was great. I’d probably say that it’s a ski area for intermediates, not necessarily for beginners as the slopes are wide but quite steep which could be daunting. There’s a variety of different things available for non-skiers like horse and cart rides, sledging etc.
It’s not a huge town but it’s enough. We enjoyed the bars and ate out one evening which was nice. It’s nice to walk through the different parts, which aren’t as pretty as Meribel or Courchevel 1850 but are still nice.

There was hardly any snow at the beginning of the season and they actually gave us half of the lift pass price back as there were only a few runs open. I did a couple of reds but mainly stuck to the nursery slope while my son who’s a better skier was able to cover more and caught the bus into Saalbach one day for the better conditions over there.
It’s hard to judge what Hinterglemm’s like as we didn’t see it with snow, but it seemed to be a pretty little village with a couple of shops, bars and restaurants. It’s near to Saalbach where there’s a bit more going on and one day we took the train into Salzburg where they had Christmas markets on.

Hinterglemm is a really decent resort; the ski pass takes you all over Hinterglemm and Saalbach.
It’s always quiet towards the end of the season and isn’t the most lively of resorts like St Anton or places like that, but we don’t go there for that kind of thing.
There’s plenty of skiing and the village is nice and friendly.
There isn’t necessarily much skiing on wide gentle for beginners, but we are good skiers so it didn’t affect us.

I went on a university ski trip here and can confirm that Austrians know how to party! Definitely the best apres ski, in terms of nightlife, that I’ve ever experienced. London Bar was amazing, as was virus bar. The town was really cool with most of the action happening on one main strip. Skiing wise, quite low altitude so not the best snow I’ve ever skied on, but still some fun runs and good tree-lined stuff and more than enough for an amazing week (might get bored after a fortnight). I seem to recall there was also a bar with some sort of live animals, perhaps goats… weird. [we're not sure if this review is about Saalbach or Hinterglemm - Ed.]
