Alpe d'Huez February 2016

We liked Alpe d’Huez and all said we’d go back. The ski area’s very good and covers most levels, with stuff for expert skiers and a fair bit of off piste.

Preferred La Plagne

Reviewed 8 Jun 2016

Didn’t like Alpe d’Huez as much as La Plagne. The layout of the resort isn’t great and the glacier isn’t great – there’s only one way skiing down via the tunnel, or you have to get the gondola. They’d shut some of the lifts because of the weather so the skiing was very limited.

Enjoyed Alpe!

Reviewed 6 Jun 2016

My first time to Alpe and I really enjoyed it, it’s a very good area with very good skiing. It covers all sorts of levels which is good for all abilities. The altitude is good and the way it sits is a real positive – you’re not just getting snow, you’re getting good quality snow. Lower resorts would get slow but be slushy, whereas here you have good, dry powder.

Nice resort, not great for snowboarding

Reviewed 6 Jun 2016

Alpe d’Huez was great and we enjoyed it. I’m a boarder so found it a bit tricky (it’s worth being aware that this isn’t a great place to board as there are lots of flat bits). The others who were skiing found it great and overall it’s a good area.

Family holiday in Alpe d'Huez

Reviewed 2 Jun 2016

Alpe d’Huez is very pretty and has a nice feel to it, I liked it and would happily go again! The kids had lessons while we did the whole area which was great, it’s quite a broad area so I would quite like to go back. Our youngest isn’t a very confident skier and there were lots of greens which was great.
The ski school was fine, French instructors always do things a bit differently and in general the French seemed quite fed up of visitors by the end of the season! It was difficult at the start when my daughter was still getting her ski legs back and they wanted to put her down a class, though actually I think she’d have been better off in the intermediate class. However in general it was OK.

Sunny skiing in Alpe d'Huez

Reviewed 26 May 2016

A lovely week in Alpe d’Huez with a perfect mix of hot sunshine and snow. I’d been before and the reason I returned was mainly that it’s so huge, with loads of pistes and good snow. I would recommend it to anyone intermediate or experienced. The O Bar is really good with great food and drink.

My experience of Alpe d'Huez

Reviewed 23 May 2016

I’ve visited Alpe d’huez on two occasions; once briefly in December whilst staying in neighbouring Les Deux Alpes and most recently I stayed in chalet Le Lac Blanc for a week’s holiday.

It’s a large resort with a few different areas, so it’s best to know where you’d like to be close to or speak to us for advice! There’s a great lift system however, so even if you’re staying in Huez village or the Old Town or Les Bergers, it is all linked together for convenience.

Sublime Sunshine

Reviewed 11 May 2016

It was January... And we were skiing with just T-shirts under our jackets and having lunch out on sun loungers - the weather was just sublime! The views were tremendous and the skies were so blue. It’s a good ski area – because it was warm in the day and cold at night the snow was crisp until 10am, then quite slushy at the end of the day.

Good skiing for a week

Reviewed 10 May 2016

Weather included a bit of everything – a couple of days when it was lovely and sunny, a reasonable amount of powder and what wasn’t quite a white out, but did have reduced visibility. In general, the ski area could have done with more snow. It’s a good ski area with a mix of everything, the only thing if you’re more competent is that you can do the whole resort quite quickly. Even though appears to be big it’s not like Val d’Isere and the 3 / 4 valleys, one week is definitely enough. The town is good with a swimming pool, gym, cinema, ice rink, bars and restaurants.

Good ski area

Reviewed 6 May 2016

We had good snow and I thought the Alpe d’Huez ski area was pretty good. We were on mainly blue and red runs, there aren’t that many blacks and it’s definitely more of a beginner’s resort. Because it was half term and a popular place for learners, the green and blue areas were busy. But if you went further out, the reds and blacks were surprisingly quiet.

A wonderful week in Alpe d'Huez

Reviewed 5 May 2016

I think Alpe d’Huez has great slopes; even though they were icy (we skied late Feb) we had a wonderful time. On the whole the ski area is pretty good for intermediate skiers, and it would have been good for beginners too without the ice. There isn’t much to do other than skiing, though you could maybe occupy yourselves for one day – there’s a nice spa.

Best in the Alps!

Reviewed 3 May 2016

Another fantastic week in Alpe d’Huez. I personally think it’s the best ski resort in the Alps. It tends to be more French than British because of where it’s located in the Alps. You have access to a good mixture of terrain. There’s a lot to do with a lot of facilities in the town – though as we were on a lads ski trip we were always up first thing in the morning and skiing all day. There’s plenty of nightlife and things aren’t as ridiculously priced as you find elsewhere.

Great for all seasons

Reviewed 4 Feb 2016

Alpe d’huez is a great resort for all seasons; its glacier reaches an impressive 3800m ensuring great snow right up top! With the longest black ski run in Europe and some nice off piste, it also gives the more experienced skier plenty to do! You can stay in two main areas of Alpe d’Huez, Bergers and the old town centre. Bergers offers a good ski in / ski out location close to ski school which is good for families. There is a small shopping complex also nearby with a few restaurants. The town centre is a good place to stay as that’s where most of the bars and restaurants are located along with British favourite Smithys Bar, but not as ideally located in terms of ski in / ski out. Overall an awesome resort, not too far from Grenoble airport with a transfer time under 2hrs!

Great family holiday

Reviewed 25 Jun 2015

We liked Alpe d’Huez very much, it delivered all we wanted from our family ski holiday. You can ski high, and even in the afternoons when it got slushy (we visited in April), there was plenty to ski and plenty of restaurants and other things to do. The kids loved Folie Douce which has live music and nice food and there were places near the bottom by the ski school for a nice croque monsieur and amazing fresh donuts (though we think one of the restaurants at the bottom cloned our AMEX card – we got the money back in the end but keep aware). The weather was fantastic, three hours of snow produced a massive amount of cover as we arrived and then we had blue skies all week. The only downside was that the ESF ski school were a bit snobby. They weren’t very good at grading our girls who were fearless skiers on our previous holiday, but ended up being bored in the second class, where everyone else could just about snowplough. The first instructor didn’t speak much English, despite the school saying they had English speaking instructors. In the end we asked for them to move classes and after that they had a great time.

First ski holiday

Reviewed 6 May 2015

We had a really good first ski trip here – we didn’t use any of the tuition but the beginner to intermediate part of the resort is really good and we had good weather in the main apart from our first run of the week! My advice to others who are new to the resort would be to take a day away from your skis and explore everywhere else. There are loads of other things to do like ski-doing and husky rides and the swimming pool is included in the lift pass so it’s worth going for a swim. There are also lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. I can’t think of anything bad to say about this place and after our first time skiing, we definitely plan to go again sometime.

Snowboarding in Alpe d'Huez, March 15

Reviewed 27 Apr 2015

Because I snowboard I tend to look for places that don’t have any drag lifts and the only one I saw in Alpe d’Huez was at the ski school, so I would definitely recommend it to other boarders. It was a bit too sunny - middle of March and the last day was 18°C – which meant that everything was a bit soft and slushy. It wasn’t too bad, but if you went anywhere steep it would be like skiing through slush puppy – the wider slopes were much better. On the Sunday we had quite high winds and the lifts were all shut. I’d not had the chance to explore the resort so I had a bit of a wander – it’s more of a town than a lot of resorts, with some bits and pieces to do like an outdoor swimming pool and ice rink, which you could use once each with your ski pass. I did some parachuting off the top of the hill which cost 30-35€ - a nice and relaxing experience.

A good week in Alpe d'Huez

Reviewed 13 Apr 2015

Alpe d’Huez has so many restaurants and a lot of intermediate runs which we enjoyed – my son had skied 2 years in Niederau before this holiday and he really progressed here. We had beautiful weather, there had been a dump the weekend we arrived and on the Monday and then the rest of the week was blue skies and sunshine (it got icy on the last day but then there was another huge dump as we were leaving).

Not a big ski area, but we had a good week

Reviewed 8 Apr 2015

We had a very nice time and were extremely lucky with the snow. The trip out was thrown into chaos when Chambery closed because of the Boxing Day 2014 snowfall, but we weren’t unduly delayed – we went out into the carpark and found ourselves a coach! This was our first time skiing Alpe d’Huez and I’ve been to busier resorts. Alpe d’Huez is a little limited on runs compared to other resorts but what runs there were we really enjoyed. The area as a whole is pretty mixed, we found plenty of reds to ski and there were also some easy blues. Some of the people in our chalet were pretty much beginners and they seemed to enjoy themselves. There are other things to do around the resort like ice skating and swimming in the open air pool.

Cracking resort!

Reviewed 8 Apr 2015

This was a return trip to Alpe d’Huez. The snow conditions weren’t great anywhere at the beginning of the season although we were lucky because it snowed while we were there. Alpe d’Huez is big and varied and that’s what saved the holiday – despite the poor snow conditions the snow cannons were doing a good job. We could still enjoy slopes like the long Sarenne, which is marked black (although some parts are more red, some parts are blue and the final bit is more like a flat-ish green). If you haven’t been before, go into Vaujinay via the black La Fare run, it’s a really good run (if the snow’s good and you’re quite experienced) and the little village is worth a visit as it has some nice restaurants. I’d also recommend the restaurant at the top of Signal which is a good place to stop at the end of the day.

Good apres

Reviewed 31 Mar 2015

We had a really good week in Alpe d’Huez – it has good après ski and nightlife (would definitely recommend Folie Douce) and we had quite a good week of snow considering the slow start to the season. If you haven’t been before, try paraskiing! The snowboarding was alright, but not as brilliant as I’ve found elsewhere.

Alpe D’Huez in January

Reviewed 2 Sep 2014

In terms of skiing it is an absolute heaven for beginners and children as the resort is a giant bowl fed by a huge network of greens that feed straight back into the central ski school meeting point- this means even late on in the season beginners can benefit from lots of greens to choose from as Alpe D’Huez is at a high altitude. If you are an experienced skier I wouldn’t say that Alpe D’Huez is the best location as there is not a huge selection of challenging blacks and you have to travel far afield on multiple lifts to reach the best ones and when you get there, there is only one. Having said this there are some great long blacks that we enjoyed, especially the very long ‘Sarenne’ and ‘Combe Chabonniere’ and if you take the cable car all the way to the top of Pic Blanc there are a handful of tough blacks to try. There’s a reason Alpe D’Huez is known as the "L'ile au Soleil" as even in early January the weather was warm and we had sunny skies everyday (unfortunately slopes lower down were unskiable towards Villard-Reculas and Vaujany). In terms of appearance it is a very modern purpose-built resort with good amenities (sports centre, ice rink and heated pool) but is not a quaint alpine town (hardly any chalets, mostly apartments), if that’s what you’re going for-but it does offer a high sunny ski base that is more affordable than most French ski resorts. At the end of the day we skied down to apres at Folie Douce which is renowned for its table-dancing and thumping music and is incredibly popular with tourists, we also loved Smithy’s tavern which was much smaller but had great music and an informal atmosphere and cheap drinks offers. Later on the town starts to buzz and the main clubs are all within 5 seconds of each other which is perfect to mix things up if you want; the Sporting is great and has a young crowd but is slightly pricier than the fun Igloo nearby. For something a little wacky and weird Freeride has a slide down to the toilets but our favourite spot to visit before we hit Igluclub was Underground who had an awesome live house band and showered us with free shots! We loved the cheap food on offer at most of the restaurants (even up the mountain they weren’t that pricey) and spent one too many lunches chomping down pizza at ‘Au Trappeur’ and Pinocchio pizzeria where the owner had learnt most of our names by the end of the week! When we decided to give some other food a try and break the pizza addiction we fell in love with Edelweiss which was an intimate restaurant that was always packed with locals and tourists and their regional food was warming and tasty as well as the pricier Signal 2108 that had awesome views and unbeatable fondue.

Slushtastic! Les Deux Alpes is better for late season skiing

Reviewed 24 Jun 2014

It was our first time here. It’s a very small ski area compared with what we are used to. We usually cover at least 60km a day. It’s good for people who want nice, easy runs, and don’t need a huge area; it would be great for beginners. It was a last minute cheap trip and we were happy with it. It was baking hot while we were there, 22 degrees! The snow was slushtastic. I came back with a stunning goggle tan!
The après is alright, there are a few good bars. We went to this one place called Freeride where they had this stock-market drink pricing strategy – really strange! We had a hysterical time there. It was a great holiday, we had a really good time over all.
We took the helicopter over to Les Deux Alpes one day, organised through our rep who told us about it on the coach journey from the airport. It cost about 75 euro and it wasn’t actually that much more expensive than taking the bus over. We got dropped off on the side of the mountain, James Bond style, and the trip was spectacular.
Les Deux Alpes is a bit higher than Alpe d’Huez and there was better snow there. It was perfect up on top.

Everyone has to ski the Sarenne

Reviewed 23 Jun 2014

It was a bit too hot at the end of March, so the snow wasn’t ideal, but we had a good time anyway. It’s a good place to learn and has some nice greens but there are plenty of nice blacks too and you can ski over in Les 2 Alpes. Everyone has to try the Sarenne which is the longest black run in Europe (16km) – I think it’s a black because of the length, the last 6km is just flat as it goes onto a green and the rest isn’t that bad, there’s just the odd 500m that’s quite tricky. If you get travel sick you won’t like the journey to Alpe d’Huez, which has 21 hair pins!

The best place we’ve skied!

Reviewed 16 Jun 2014

The resort is massive, much bigger than what we’re used to. There’s plenty of slopes catering for everyone, which suited our mixed-ability group perfectly. It’s also very easy to visit neighbouring resorts from here. We visited Auris via a series of chair lifts, which was lovely – and there are lots of other places you can ski to. You could easily ski the area for a couple of years and still have places to explore. There are some nice beautiful bars and places to eat high up in the mountains … and we found a funky music bar with dancers which was great fun. We had good snow despite visiting in April and Alpe d’Huez has fantastic scenery as you’d expect from the Alps.

A top resort

Reviewed 4 Jun 2014

I really recommend this resort, it’s a top resort. There are some really long runs, there’s the longest black in Europe which I think is about 16km. It’s a very good ski area and ideal for all round skiing, there is something for all levels. We are intermediate to advanced but we had some people with us who were skiing for only the second time. They improved a lot while they were there. It’s a great resort for learning, and it’s good for children, it would be the perfect place to take a 3 year old. There is a bowl area which has a nursery area, and for advanced skiers there is a tunnel which cuts through the mountain and takes you to an area with blacks and a mogul field. That black area isn’t always open, it depends on the conditions. Some of the blacks aren’t really blacks either when the snow is good.
Alpe d’Huez is near to Les Deux Alpes too do you can take to coach over and ski there. I prefer Alpe d’Huez to Les Deux Alpes because the runs back down to the town are better. Also there are more areas to ski in Alpe d’Huez and more variety.
There’s a great chairlift ride which goes under the runway of the airport and takes you up the other side so you can ski over there.
There are lots of bars in town. The Igloo is the main club (I didn’t go there). Then there is the Rum Bar which is very lively and has a live band. There’s also somewhere called the Dive which has a slide down to the toilet with a big mattress at the bottom, it can get a bit mad in there! They have an interesting thing at the bar too where they have stock market prices. So you can go away and then come back to the bar and the price for your drink has gone down or up. I’ve never seen that before.
There is also an Irish bar where the English tour operators tend to go, that’s a good place for a night out and they do quiz nights, etc.

We got engaged here!

Reviewed 22 May 2014

We’ve been here several times and actually got engaged here! We like it a lot. The skiing is great for anyone, it’s nice for beginners (there are lots of green slopes) but really it’s good for everyone. There is good nightlife as well. We didn’t go out so much this time because we had our baby with us, but last time we came we went out quite a bit. There are lots of nice bars. We didn’t use it, but the childcare in resort is meant to be quite good.
It’s a good resort for non-skiers. We brought my parents with us and they don’t ski; there was plenty for them to do though. There’s so much for children: you can rent sledges and there are some nice walks. They’ve also got a leisure centre with an ice rink, and there’s snow shoeing and husky rides.

Lots of skiing, nice & quiet in March

Reviewed 18 May 2014

Alpe d’Huez has a big area for skiing with lots of different sections and stuff for all levels. If you came as a mixed group of different abilities it would be perfect and if you were here for the first time, the beginner slopes looked really good too. We were here in March and didn’t have to queue long for the lifts, it wasn’t very busy at all. We had a mix of weather – the snow was pretty good and we had a white out one day as well as some lovely sunshine.
There’s lots to do like ice skating and the ice cave was fantastic, we went there by chance is it was so cold on the white out day and it’s definitely something I would recommend.

First time skiing here & would go back

Reviewed 14 May 2014

We liked the skiing and the weather was good – it was the week after New Year which I’m sure was a lot busier! It was a good week apart from the fact that I injured my knee on the first day... I was still able to ski though. There’s a wide choice of skiing levels with a bit of everything and it’s all well spread out. There were lots of ski schools on the lower slopes and a good number of long, steady slopes which we liked as well as trickier stuff higher up which we didn’t go to. We found some nice places to eat on the piste and the service was good, there were no delays on hold ups getting on the chair lifts.

It was packed!

Reviewed 8 May 2014

We actually preferred our other ski holiday in Serre Chevalier last year because Alpe d’Huez was so packed when we went. It was French half term and there were a lot of people - don’t go there over French half term!
The off-piste was all torn up by the time we got to it. It got a bit icy as well towards the end of the week because the weather was so nice. It’s a good resort though because it spans across several valleys and there’s a wide range of runs. Because there is only one main lift, we had to queue at the bottom to get up. We didn’t go out much but some of our friends who we met there did and they seemed happy with the night life.

Great first ski holiday

Reviewed 6 May 2014

I skied here with my family – it was the first time we went skiing so I can’t really compare it to anywhere else, but I really liked it! We stayed over half term but it was actually not that busy as it was half term for the UK but not a school holiday week for France. One thing we really liked about Alpe d’Huez was that there were so many places to go, even after one week you feel like you want to go again to ski the other bits. The weather was excellent, with the sun shining almost every day!

Big resort and better prices than Meribel

Reviewed 25 Apr 2014

This was my first time in Alpe d’Huez and I quite liked it. It’s a good size as it’s one of the bigger resorts, I didn’t want to stay anywhere too small. There are a good number of runs, my brother and his friend were learning to snowboard and it’s pretty much perfect for beginners as there are lots of greens and blues that are nice and long, so you don’t have to keep going up and down.
It might cater a little more for the beginner – intermediate selection but there’s a really long black right at the top and a few pretty cool red runs too.
It seemed like they had quite a cool amount of facilities and things to do, there’s a climbing wall and a leisure centre and ice rink if you want that kind of stuff.
We went to a couple of restaurants and bars and they were good, very reasonably priced compared to places like Meribel.

Awesome Place

Reviewed 24 Apr 2014

Alpe d’Huez is an awesome place, it’s south facing so you get sun all afternoon. I’d definitely recommend it to beginners: my wife is a beginner skier and all the lower button lifts are free, so we didn’t bother with buying her a ski pass until the last couple of days, which saved a lot of money. Alpe d’Huez covers pretty much every level of skier and there are definitely some hard runs, including the longest in Europe which is 16km (it’s called Sarenne). In the town there’s a supermarket, delicatessens and patisseries as well as restaurants and bars – Shark’s is a nice Irish bar that did a good pub quiz.

Loads of slopes & park, fun apres ski

Reviewed 4 Apr 2014

This was our first group trip to Alpe d’Huez and it was really good, it has everything you need.
There are loads of slopes and a decent park with jumps and rails.

If you walk to the top of the hill, Sphere bar has amazing cocktails and there’s also a stock exchange bar where they change the price of drinks every fifteen minutes which is really good fun.
There were tons of reps everywhere for whenever you needed them. I’d definitely recommend the pub crawl which is good fun, there were usually about 10 reps there but only 2 on duty so it was a laugh.

Not as picturesque as 3 Valleys but cheaper!

Reviewed 4 Apr 2014

Three days we were here in February it never stopped snowing, it was really cold! Couldn’t fault the ski area, there are plenty of slopes so you never have to ski the same slope twice.
We went as families in a group of 12 and without a doubt I’d recommend the area to a mixed group of skiers.
It’s not so picturesque as places like Meribel and Courchevel and a bit more purpose built and I’d say our holiday here wasn’t as good as when we ski in La Plagne, but then again it was cheaper.

Skiing for all abilities, beatuiful round back towards Vaujany

Reviewed 20 Mar 2014

Alpe d’Huez is an excellent, all-purpose resort. The skiing is fantastic for all abilities, with very challenging runs and very easy runs too.
A good run is the Sarenne which is black graded but actually really easy because it’s so long – 16km.
Round the back towards Vaujany the skiing is really beautiful. It’s a lovely village and the restaurants are cheaper than in the main resort so this makes a good stop for lunch.
We had a meal out at the Genepi restaurant one evening; we had eaten there before and went back again which shows how good it is.
Some of the people I stayed with really liked the swimming pools at the resort.

There's quite a few restaurants and bars (but can’t remember the names!) – we had a really good night in a crappy Irish one (can’t remember the name of that either!).

My friends loved it so much they moved out there!

I have lived in Alpe Dhuez for two winter seasons I have a number of friends that love it so much they still live out there all year round. It is home to the longest run in Europe, if not the world, at a staggering 16km. I experienced this famous piste at night time, when skiing it is known as the Sarenne by moonlight. The "moonlight Sarenne" involves eating a typical French dish on the glacier in a hut while waiting for the Moon to rise into the sky, and then setting of with head torches on one’s head and the guidance of the moon. One of the most amazing experiences! Alpe dhuez is also home to great night life, from the more grown up atmosphere of the regular bars, to the more lively nights starting with slammers at the Underground bar and finishing in the Igloo night club with a spot of dancing.

We agree is great for intermediates & beginners

Alpe d’Huez was little bit flatter than Les Deux Alpes from what I can remember. I remember is that their resort logo is a marmotte and I may be completely wrong about that! From what I’ve heard from friends, we all agree it is a really good area for intermediates and beginners, but the snow can suffer later in the season if it’s very hot, because of the south facing slopes, but there is a glacier so I’m being picky because it is pretty snowsure compared to most ski areas. I have visited the town itself more recently and still feel that from what I have seen it doesn’t really seem to have a central focus point but there are some cool shops and bars wherever you go, so as long as you are prepared to have a look around, there is plenty to do.
