Family trip to Alpbach

Reviewed 19 Apr 2016

A very good friend goes to Alpbach every year and said it was great, so we thought we’d visit. For the kids (aged 20 and 21) Alpbach was a little boring – they would have found it nicer with a bit more night life. For us, we were so tired after skiing that we just wanted to go into the sauna and drink! To sum it up, it’s an older persons resort. In the end it was fine as the kids were also tired (though they wouldn’t admit it!).
In terms of the weather… We flew into Innsbruck and there was no snow to be seen… We arrived in Alpbach and there was no snow to be seen… Our rep told us it was fine higher up on the mountains but we were dubious! Then it snowed that night and we woke up to everything in white. Good skiers may still have been disappointed, but it was ok for me. It could be totally different weather next year, but maybe if we went that early in the season again next time we’d go somewhere higher with a guarantee of snow.

nice little place to learn to board

Reviewed 20 May 2014

Alpbach was great for Laura to learn to snowboard for the first time – she’s like a pro now! After a few days she was going down blacks. The snow was really good, we were very lucky; the conditions were about a 7/10 every day. It snowed the first night so there was a massive dump of snow right at the beginning of the week. The visibility was good and we had some nice weather too. The resort wasn’t too busy which was nice, I don’t think we had to queue once.
For what we needed the ski area was good. It was perfect for Laura to push herself on, it wasn’t all flat greens, and it’s a pretty good area for snowboarders generally. I think if we had gone somewhere else she wouldn’t have progressed as fast. There were some good runs, for snowboarders it’s worth mapping out where you want to go beforehand so you don’t get stuck on tiny little forest runs.
There are two sides to the ski area, one on each side of the valley. We actually found that the less popular side was better. It was so empty, we were pretty much the only people at times! Both sides are equally as good as each other really, even though everyone thinks there is just one main area. There isn’t much off-piste, but we did spot one untracked area. I think now we have done this resort we might try another, but we would like to go to somewhere similar again because Alpbach was just right.
While we were in Alpbach we also tried the Olympic bob-sliegh track which was worth every penny! It’s really good. I think it costs about 70 Euro.
There were enough restaurants in town for us to eat out every night, we always found somewhere. There were some good ones up on the mountain too, and the prices were pretty good. It was probably about 10-15 Euro for a meal either in town or up on the mountain. The food tended to be traditional/Austrian, some of which isn’t our thing, but we found one restaurant in town that we really liked near the church and that served really good pizza and pasta. There was also a restaurant by the doctors which had really dodgy décor (1980’s palm trees…) and it looked awful, but don’t let that put you off, the food is actually really nice there. It was recommended to us as the place that all the locals eat in.
It’s a nice little town, it’s very peaceful and quiet. Good for a couples or family holiday.

Great for a quiet, intermediate family holiday

Reviewed 28 Apr 2014

The village is small and quiet – it’s supposed to be the prettiest village in Austria.
The skiing is super but the connection to Neiderau isn’t worth doing.
There is a good variety of slopes but it’s mainly intermediate.
