This isn’t the highest resort in the Alps or the best for late season (though the tourist office do boast of the area being ‘snow sure’ and having ‘guaranteed snow’), but on a good snow year you’ll enjoy some fabulous spring skiing around Kirchberg. If the local winter temperatures carry on dropping as they have been for the last couple of decades, you could be in for a real treat. The good thing about this resort is that even if - worst case scenario - you’re only skiing in the morning, there’s more than enough to fill at least a week’s worth of afternoons.
If you’re bringing the kids over the school holidays, there are lots of things to enjoy in the sunshine, like snow biking, ice climbing, tobogganing and sleigh riding. Animal or nature lovers should head to Herzogenaurach Wildlife Park in nearby Aurach where there’s an amazing collection of local and more exotic animals.
Of course, there’s no better way to enjoy the spring weather than sitting back with a stein on a sun terrace and when the skies are clear, the views of the Kitzbüheler Alpen are better than ever. We love the terrace (and strudel) at Gasthof Ochsalm. If you want to push the boat out, let award winning chef Simon Taxacher take care of your Sunday lunch on Easter day at his restaurant on the main Aschauerstrasse – book the table ASAP as it’s very popular!
