Overview: hotel description: Hotel MIM Baqueira description

Part of football star Lionel Messi's hotel company, the MIM fits right in with the other modern hotels in the fashionable Ruda part of Baqueira, which feels like an exclusive resort within a resort – the hotel's connected to a covered shopping gallery filled with bars and restaurants, so you don't even have to step outside to find somewhere for a tipple and a bite to eat. Plus the nearest lift's only a minutes' walk on the other end, which makes getting up and out on the slopes each morning a piece of cake.

Things inside the hotel are just as fab as its location – warm and earthy creams give it a fresh and light feel, and a mix of different fabrics and textures add a layer of luxe. There’re plenty of squishy sofas near the fire to sink into after a day on the slopes, or you can pay a little extra for a pamper in the state-of-the-art spa facilities. We’re talking a steamy indoor pool with fancy jets and showers, as well as hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms where you can while away the hours.

Feeling hungry? Kick off each morning at the breakfast buffet and load your plate up Mediterranean-style with cold meats, cheese and pastries – or make a beeline for the eggs and bacon. And you’re in for a real treat in the evenings, with another buffet chock-full of Spanish and Catalan cuisine and all the other international classics you’d expect. If you fancy mixing it up, you can also head to one of the hotel’s two bars for a small plate or two, or pop by later for a cocktail to wrap up the day.

Less crowds Gorgeous Pyrenees scenery Huge variety of ski terrain

With a history of non-existent lift queues, terrain that holds up against any of the big-hitter alpine resorts and a rather pleasing price tag to boot, it’s well worth opting for a change of scenery and a week of sun, snow and sangria in this brilliant Spanish ski town.

Established in 1964 and developed by Spanish national ski champion Luis Arias, Baqueira attracts a predominantly Spanish clientele – his majesty, Juan Carlos, has his own residence here, which his children are said to visit nearly every weekend of the season. But don’t expect Espagnol to be the only language, or culture, you encounter in this remote region of the Pyrenees… In actual fact it’s the third official language, behind Catalan and Aranese - an offshoot of Catalan exclusive to the surrounding Aran Va...
If you’re a first-timer, make your way up to the beginner park via the Baqueira gondola, where you’ll find the forgiving Rabada and Pastores greens to master your turns on before graduating to bluer pastures. Easy-going blues run from Beret through Baqueira and on to Bonaigua, so if you’re quick finding your feet, you’ll soon be able to ski the length of the resort. Tentative intermediates can ride the Jesus Serra chair towards Beret to take their pick of nine blue runs (we like the long and rolling Ta Baq...
The beauty of skiing in a Spanish resort is hands down the all-night-long, Spanish après! Baq isn’t a huge resort, but it has built an extensive collection of quality drinking spots. Start off with a glass of fizz at Beret’s chic Moet Lounge and then head down to El Refugi de San Miguel, which serves blissfully cold (you guessed it) San Miguel. To really make like a local though, order a cremate - a hot brandy and popular Catalonian tipple. Dinner tends to start at after 9 in Spain and consists mainly of...
