Tignes (pronounced 'Teens' by Brits and 'Teenya' by the French) is one half of the vast ‘Tignes-Val d'Isere’ ski area, one of the biggest linked domains in France. High-altitude terrain and Grande Motte glacier skiing ensure the resort both opens earlier in the ski season and also closes later than most resorts, and we’ve even seen lifts running for stints of summer skiing. Split into 5 purpose-built villages with distinct characters, it's well linked by pistes, lifts and free buses. Tignes Le Lac (aka Tignes...
With varied pistes at a high altitude, the ski area has impressive powdered terrain for skiers and boarders alike. Beginners can practice on the nursery slopes at Le Lac and Le Lavachet, where you'll find gentle, quiet runs that are accessible via free beginners' lifts. Le Bollin at Val Claret is another conveniently situated green and Grattalu is a lovely wide blue for those wanting to build confidence. Tignes is incredible if you ski at an intermediate level, with miles of powdery blue and red runs includi...
While it's said that those who appreciate Tignes do so for the serious skiing over the après ski, this doesn't do justice to the fact that Tignes' 60+ bars/pubs and 4 night clubs provide some of the best nightlife in the Alps. All villages have their fair share of places to eat and drink, and with a shuttle bus service running 24 hours, you can enjoy your evening without worrying about the journey back. Jam bar is small but with a great atmosphere and Loop bar pretty much offers it all: with live sport, world c...

"The food was great! "

David
5/ out of 5
The chalet was fantastic! The chalet host was very pleasant. Although she did not tell us about the welcome pack with the ski hire/lift pass vouchers. We found out about this later after we had been into town. The room allocation was wrong when we arrived but the other people in the chalet were happy to move for us. The chalet is slightly out of town so it a walk, plus the minibus did not drop us off outside so we had to walk to the chalet with our luggage. Can’t complain! The meals were thought out and the menu for the week was really nice. The resort closed for one day due to the amount of snowfall, so we did have to cook our own dinner one night. It was about a 2 minute walk to the nearest lift but it wasn’t always open. Otherwise its about 5/10 minute walk to the town centre

"Lovely combo rustic building & modern amenities"

Staying in the recently refurbished Chalet Les Arolles you can really enjoy the best of both worlds. Whilst the rustic exterior and internal décor suggest a chalet from a bygone era, the fantastic en suites and interior facilities, not to mention free wifi (double check this as I'm writing this review in 2013 & chalet reviews are not deleted with age!), are very much up to date. With balconies in the dining room and lounge offering sensational views of the neighbouring pistes, and a selection of lifts (and the resorts centre) within a five minute walk, you have everything you need virtually on your doorstep!
