We think this is one of the best times to head to Heavenly in terms of an all-round experience. Around about the time in the season when typically the best snow is found, you’re likely to experience favourable conditions from Heavenly’s 360 inches average snowfall and 300 sunny days. If you don’t however, then the trees covering the mountain mean you can shelter from adverse conditions, saving you from wind or flat light. In addition, with 73% of the runs covered with artificial snow making equipment, even if there is little to no natural snow during your stay, the groomers are usually kept in pretty pristine conditions.
Obviously, if you’re looking to go in February half term, then the likelihood is you have kids. The ski school here is of the highest quality, offering full ski lessons from the age of 4. They also offer childcare options; for kids between the age of 3 and 4, they will experience an hour’s lesson in the Enchanted Forest before heading back to play for the rest of the day. 4 and 5 years olds can have the same option, but the Enchanted Forest lesson is 2 hours long. Just childcare is offered for children from 6 weeks to 6 years.
If you haven’t burnt off enough energy during the day, or fancy a break from skiing, drop by the family favourite Tubing Hill for an exciting descent down a 500 foot long track in a rubber ring, great for a spot of adrenaline. Alternatively, head to the ice rink in Heavenly Village to glide over the ice in the shadow of the mountains as well as in front of the beautiful Lake Tahoe. Borges Sleigh Rides offer a peaceful and enjoyably different way to take in the surrounding nature.
Don’t forget the strict laws about children in establishments serving alcohol here – it’s best to ring beforehand just to check. Base Camp Pizza is a sure bet for your family favourite monolithic pizzas, or if you wanted a cheap, hearty meal, the Taqueria Jalisco is a Mexican restaurant with huge burritos that are absolutely delicious.
