Poorly managed.

Reviewed 25 Mar 2015

Our stay in the Matterhorn was a disappointment and we won’t be booking with this chalet company again. It was all down to poor management and if they’d made some small, logical changes it would have been a completely different story.

It started with our arrival at the airport, when we found ourselves in the middle of all the post-Christmas chaos getting up the hill. We were lucky enough to get to our chalet but two of our party didn’t and the management of the situation wasn’t good at all. When we did arrive, they dropped us off from the coach and we were left waiting outside in the cold for a long time waiting for the shuttle. Couldn’t they have kept us on the coach while we waited? Or arranged the pick up to be on time?

Then we got to the chalet, which we’d selected specifically for the fact that there was a Jacuzzi. However the Jacuzzi wasn’t working until Wednesday /Thursday because the hosts hadn’t been given the sufficient training on how to provide day to day maintenance and managed to freeze the pipes when water changed. Instead of immediately calling outside maintenance it was left, thinking it would eventually heat up, but it did not. When eventually the maintenance was called (not management) it was fixed but we were without this main feature for most of the week.

Between our party we 4 rooms - a lot of which didn’t have bedside lamps, and none had mirrors other than in the downstairs bathroom for the mezzanine bedrooms meaning that one had to go up and down the stairs to see oneself.

There was a big garage under the chalet which would have been a logical place for us to store our skis, boots etc. However we were forbidden to use it and instead had to leave everything (18 sets of skis, boots, poles) in a small, 6x10ft hallway where there wasn’t even enough room to take our boots off. There were no boot warmers or anywhere to dry boots. A few of us kept them outside the sauna in the hope of drying them, but it was not always on and in the basement where we were told not to take them. Another issue that was down to the managers - there was more than enough room in the garage and it would have been more sensible to make use of it rather than take over our living space.

The two twin girls who hosted us were excellent, but for a chalet of 20 guests it was understaffed and the girls had far too much to do, leaving them under a lot of pressure (we heard that last year there had been four hosts). We ended up helping them to clean as we didn’t want to live in a messy environment and they couldn’t cope with it all on their own.

The food was OK - not the best I’ve had but the girls managed well and the kitchen was considerably well equipped. The wine however was disgusting, to the point that everyone went out and bought their own!

The location was reasonably good. The resort itself was lovely and you could walk into the town centre from the chalet which was good. The chalet’s halfway up a hill on a horseshoe shaped road and there were drivers who picked you up and took you to the slopes. However the arrangement with the drivers was bizarre... They insisted that we went up the hill to hail the bus to a fixed pick up point. We ended up sending one of us to hail and then come down with it to outside the chalet to pick up the rest of us.

The size and layout of the chalet didn’t lend itself to being sociable. With max occupation levels of 20, it had such little space to accommodate the guests in the living area. There weren’t enough sofa seats in the chalet for everyone, so we had to either stay sitting in the dining room or bring the dining room chairs into the living room.

As it was, we ended up staying with such a great bunch of people that we all got on tremendously and everyone ended up skiing together - the comradery was what kept us going despite the problems with the chalet.

Great hosts & fellow guests, wine & hot tub not so great

Reviewed 20 Mar 2015

Great hospitality, the twin girls who were running the chalet couldn’t do more for you. Although we were a larger party, we gelled with the other guests and we were all skiing together by the end of the week.

The chalet itself was nice and well situated. It wasn’t too far from the town so you could walk in, and there was also a shuttle service that ran all over Meribel throughout the day.

The rooms were fine and we enjoyed the food thanks to excellent cooks, although the wine was terrible and we ended up buying our own every night...

The hot tub wasn’t working, which was a shame - this could have been addressed a bit sooner than it was.

Our main problem with the package however was the journey to resort. This was the week where there had been a lot of snow and many of the roads had closed. The conditions weren't anyone’s fault but our reps were completely unprepared for the situation and didn’t deal with it very well at all. They needed better training for unusual conditions and could have kept us better informed.

This place has it all

Reviewed 24 Feb 2014

A hot tub, sauna, and a log fire... can you think of anything else you’d need after a day on the slopes? Me neither! With a minibus to take you to the lifts in the morning and a great range of creature comforts to greet you in the evening, the Matterhorn seems to have it all. The resort centre, and famous apres ski venues are just a ten minute stroll away as well, so the party animals amongst you won’t have to walk far either. Remember that this review is being written early 2014, so be careful to check the official description to check facilities like sauna and hot-tub are available on your dates, as chalet details do change, and the description will be updated to remain accurate, where as reviews will not be changed.
