Spend Christmas in the wonderful Nordic resort of Trysil – worlds away from home near the Swedish border. It feels fabulously festive here at Christmas time, with trees and decorations as well as special events and activities. Children can look out for the resort mascot, Valle the snowman, on the slopes, and there’s often an appearance from Santa who gives out gifts. Our favourite winter wonderland activities – dog sledding and horse drawn sleigh rides – are the icing on the Christmas cake.
With the ski area usually opening in November, there tends to be a good build-up on the slopes by the time Christmas arrives – don’t be put off by the low nature of the mountains here, the climate can be incredibly snowy! Daylight hours are a little different to what we’re used to at home, with the sun setting earlier and more of a twilight-y feel . Floodlit slopes ensure you don’t lose precious ski time, while Christmas lights bring a magical atmosphere to the resort.
Most of our accommodation in Trysil is hotels, with B&B packages fuelling you up for a day on the snow, then freeing you to explore local restaurants for lunch and supper. Sometimes you can upgrade to half board if you’d rather pay for evening meals before you set off.
