Whether ending the current year or beginning the new, take this time to nail a last minute or newly formed resolution. The Saslong piste (accessed from the Ciamponoi area) is the world cup downhill run and will make for a serious adrenalin rush, let alone a challenge. Complete the Sella Ronda circuit in less than six hours and you’ll have done better than the average. New Year is a great time to try something you’ve never done before, whether it’s the cross-country skiing or a leisurely horse-pulled carriage ride in the snow. With plenty of skiing and a great atmosphere, all you’ll need is a piste map for the day and some warm clothes for the evening celebrations.
Each village usually has its own entertainment of some sort come the big evening. The hotels and restaurants like to kick off the revelries with a gala evening. If you have children with you, the ski school torch lit descent is worth a picture or two – ask the tourist office if and when it’s on this year. The Nives Square in Selva, the Dosses Square in St Cristina and the pedestrian area in Ortisei are where you’re likely to find the collective countdown. They like to make it a fun and colourful occasion, so wrap up warm and get outside for the DJ music and a glass of bubbly... just don’t drop it when the fireworks start.
