The Ruka Valley Apartments are a top pick if you're after a peaceful winter retreat that's conveniently close to the slopes. Tucked between the ski area and the Valtavaara nature reserve, this is a quiet spot where you can really appreciate the snowglobe scenery. And if you want to visit a bar or restaurant, the Village-2-Valley gondola's open until 11pm and will get you to the centre of Ruka village in 10 minutes. Want to hit the slopes pronto? The nearest lift, ski school meeting point and nursery area's right outside – then you can ski right back to the accommodation when you're done.

The building's been designed to complement the forested landscape, with stone walls and weathered timber. Inside, you can choose from a range of cosy studios and spacious apartments, all finished to a high standard with stylish natural wood decor, neutral tones and hints of olive green. All rooms have their own sauna, plus some apartments have a jacuzzi too – just what the doctor ordered.

Evenings here are all about snug nights in. Have a relaxing session in your own private sauna or head downstairs to the Camp Kitchen & Bar to enjoy a nightcap.

As for mealtimes, you can choose the freedom of being fully self-catered and grab some ingredients from the small supermarket next door to whip up tasty meals. Or if you’d prefer to leave the cooking to someone else, then you can opt for bed & breakfast or upgrade to half board. Meals are taken in the onsite Camp Kitchen & Bar – with a buffet-style breakfast to start the day and 3-course evening meal to round things off.
