And cross-country trails start almost at your door as well – perfect if you fancy trying a different type of skiing during your trip.

Inside, you’ll get a compact space that has all you need for a self-catering stay, with none of the fancy extras that push up the price. The kitchenette comes fully stocked with a microwave and fridge to a coffee maker and toaster. There’s even a dishwasher to help take care of the tidy-up. Don’t fancy cooking? Add on bed and breakfast or half board to get meals included at the nearby Ruka Valley Apartments.

When you want more than what's at your doorstep, you're still well placed – just hop on the Village-Valley gondola to reach even more options in Ruka Village, on the other side of the mountain.

All apartments are non-smoking and have a kitchenette with an oven, hob, fridge, freezer, kettle, coffee machine, microwave, toaster and dishwasher, as well as a TV and a hairdryer. Bed linen, towels and end-of-stay cleaning (except kitchenette) are included.

Studio (approx.24m²) – sleeps 1-4 (max 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children aged up to 12 years): Double bed, double sofa bed in bedroom, private shower and WC.

Cots are available to hire, for an extra charge, payable locally.

Nestled in the Finnish hills on the borders of Lapland, just south of the Arctic Circle, a visit here is a once-in-a-lifetime experience (and many return again and again). Sometimes called the ‘gateway to Lapland’, the resort was founded in the winter of 1954 when the first slope opened. Whilst larger resorts can be a bit overwhelming, the compact, unintimidating ski area here is just right for first-timers.
