Myrkdalen has one of the best snow records in the whole of Europe, so a great option anytime in the season. Set in deep in the valley surrounded by Fjords, it is best known for its magical landscape, which you can enjoy partaking in one of the many winter sports or soak in at a cosy café or restaurant on the main square. As one of Norway’s largest ski areas, the resort offers uncrowded slopes with fantastic off-piste options. All the accommodation is ski in ski out so access couldn’t be simpler. 

The nearest airport to Myrkdalen is Bergen Flesland (BGO) at 100 km or about 1h45 by car.

What's the ski area like in Myrkdalen?

Myrkdalen is an ideal resort for those looking for easy, quiet slopes to cruise around on. Many of the lifts have both a red and blue option for getting down, great for groups and for those unsure of their levels. The pistes are also lovely and wide with plenty of space. There is a dedicated area for the kids and a number of terrain parks.

What is Myrkdalen like for Beginner skiers?

The greens at the Mikkel og Mikkeline lift are the place to start, the ski school meet here, and it has a dedicated area for kids. Progession is easy with wide long pistes. The treelined Transporten run is a great confidence builder and has the added bonus of ending at a café where you can get a much-deserved hot chocolate.

What is Myrkdalen like for Intermediate skiers?

Plenty of red and blue trails on both sides of the village, to cruise around on. The Myrkdalsløypo run, longest in the area, accessed at the top of the Myrkdalsekspressen chair is a lovely way to start your day.  

What is Myrkdalen like for Advanced skiers?

Black Pisted options for the experts include the long Leinevegen and the Ondrahaugen. The reds by the Kari Traa-trekket lift also offer a good challenge. The off piste options here are also accessible by lifts. 

What is Myrkdalen like for snowboarding?

Myrkdalen has 4 snow parks. Finne Park, designed by Klaus Finne, the expert freeskier is geared for experts. The kid’s area has the other with small obstacles, gates and jumps to cut their snowboarding teeth on. The Village Park has night skiing three nights a week.

The Myrkdalen Hotel has several restaurants, Tunet has pizza, Nuten for fine dining and Nuten Fondue to enjoy a traditional Swiss meal. On the mountain, the Fjellstova Vetlebotn Café is a great spot to meet for Hot chocolate and pancakes. 

Myrkdalen Après Ski

Pudder After-Ski offers a place to have a quick bite and friendly catch drink while the slopes are open. It also opens again Friday and Saturday evenings as a nightclub. The Kamben Café shows major sporting events.

Myrkdalen Activites for Non-skiers

Some R&R options off piste include Horse drawn Sleigh rides, snow shoeing, Paret Sledging, Dog Sledding and Ski joering. Enjoy the beauty of the Fjords with a trip on the Flåm Railway. The Myrkdalen Hotel Mountain Saunas, set back surrounded by nature, are the perfect place to revitalise your tired muscles, whilst enjoying the picturesque view. Kamben is an arcade with bowling, darts and a café, with simple dishes, beers and the best coffee in the town.

Myrkdalen is a perfect resort for families, especially with young children or those learning to ski. Access to the skiing is directly outside the accommodation, like at the Myrkdalen Hotel. 

The ski area has wide open slopes and a dedicated children’s area with 4 varying green slopes and fun obstacles, as well as a mini snowpark with small jumps, gates and boxes. Not to be missed is the The Adventure Forest which is open after sundown. The Huldreskogen green run is turned into a magical playground when it is lit up with colour-changing lights. 

There is also loads to do if you want a day off skiing, enjoy a sleigh ride, the scenery on a snowshoe walk or some old-fashioned tobogganing.

If you are looking for a destination that is more about the winter wonderland than the partyland, Myrkdalen is a good destination for your group, especially if you have less experienced skiers and would like to try some of the other winter activities on offer.
