The Campo Smith apartments are pretty distinctive – a futuristic-looking building with curved, concrete walls and sweeping, flat roofs. It’s built at the foot of Bardonecchia’s nursery slopes, so heading up the mountain is easy peasy – and you can ski right back to the door at the end of the day. It’s a bit further to the resort centre, but you can hop on the ski bus that stops nearby if you don’t fancy the walk.
Inside the apartments, you’ll find everything you need for a no-frills stay in the mountains. There’s a compact kitchenette where you can whip up a simple supper, as well as small living area for kicking back in at the end of the ski day.
As for extras, you can pay a little extra to use the spa in the neighbouring Hotel Rivé and soothe your legs in the sauna and steam room. And if you’re staying with little ones, don’t miss the free kids’ club that’s run in the complex to enjoy some adult-only time exploring the resort.
· extra charge for wellness centre at the neighbouring Hotel Rivé, with pool, sauna, Turkish bath, Roman bath, emotional shower, igloo bath and fitness centre · extra charge for massages and beauty treatments · supervised children's playroom for children aged 3-8 years (9am-12noon and 2-5pm) - subject to availability, book locally · heated ski room with lockers · free WiFi · lift · 119 studios/apartments

Once a market town and now a trendy snowsports destination, Bardo has lovely forest trails, loads of wide, unpopulated slopes for learners and intermediates and snowboard terrain that featured in the 2006 Olympics. Eating out doesn’t have the eye-watering pricetag of other resorts and with superb transport links and a sunny location, this is one of Italy’s top resorts.
