Saint Martin is an island with a tropical climate, so the weather is fairly hot year-round. Daytime temperatures average between 25°c to 31°c throughout the year. You'll be pleased to know that this is an island with fewer rainy days than many other Caribbean countries.

The peak season in Saint Martin lasts from December to April which coincides with the dry season on the island. While the low season starts in May and lasts through to November, which encompasses the end of the dry season and the entirety of the rainy/hurricane season.

If you’d like to visit Saint Martin during the peak season, it's important to book in advance (at least 6 months before) in order to secure your preferred hotel as they fill up quickly. The cost for hotels during this period will also be slightly higher than in the low season but the better weather will make up for that.

Low season in Saint Martin

Low season in Saint Martin has much more hotel availability and a lower cost for them as well, which means that is ideal for last minute holidays. However, due to it being rainy/hurricane season, the weather may not be perfect. The most likely months for a hurricane to hit are between September and November. So, while it’s recommended to avoid travelling in these months, you could still have a great holiday during the low season.

Although the weather is hot year-round in Saint Martin, it’s better to save the sun tanning, beach trips and swimming for the dry season- no one wants to get drenched while catching some rays. The sea has a lovely warm temperature of between 26°c and 29°c all year.

The sea is calmer and generally the visibility of the sea is better during the dry season (December to April)

Newbie surfers visiting Saint Martin should try surfing between December and May as the seas are calmer and more beginner-friendly.

Experienced surfers can get away with surfing year-round since some beaches have consistently good waves with clean breaks even during the rainy season.

Generally, the dry season is best for any outdoorsy activities as it's less likely to rain whilst you are out and about. Certain activities such as hiking are much safer in drier weather. Temperatures and humidity are also lower, which is better for strenuous activity.

Saint Martin in January

The weather in January is perfect with average daily temperatures of 27°c and lows of 21°c during the evening. There aren't many national events during this month, but it's still the perfect time for sunbathing and swimming in the exceedingly warm sea.

Saint Martin in February

The average temperature is the same in February as in January with just as many sunny rain-free days. Aside from wonderful weather, the French side of Saint Martin hosts its’ Carnival between February and March. Don't miss out on the non-stop celebrations for two weeks! Expect Caribbean music, flamboyant costumes, costumes, competitions and parades. The main celebrations are held in Marigot.

The average temperature remains at about 27°c during the day but does get slightly warmer at night, while the amount of rainy days per month stay at no more than 10.

Saint Martin in April

The average day and night temperature increase slightly during April and so does the amount of rain. Travelling to the island in April is fantastic as the Dutch side, Sint Maarten, hosts its Carnival. Experience the bright costumes, big bands and enthralling parades. The fun ends with a Grand Parade on the final Sunday - this sometimes falls in May.

The weather stays the same as in April during this month. There are a few national celebrations this month to get excited about, including Labor Day, Abolition Day -  the week-long celebration of the abolition of slavery on the island, and Mothers’ Day.

June is much warmer than previous months as the temperature stays at around 30°c during the day. Temperatures and rain start to increase as it's the start of the wet season.

Saint Martin in July

While the weather this month stays nice and hot this is the month. The national holiday, Emancipation Day, and Bastille Day is celebrated during July.

Saint Martin in August

The weather stays the same as the previous month. Assumption Day is a day off for most of the population. Celebrate National Rum Day at Topper's Rhum Distillery in Philipsburg.

Saint Martin in September

This month continues to be very hot and rainy. September is the month most likely to get hurricanes so travelling isn't recommended. 

Saint Martin in October

October remains hot with highs of 30°c and two weeks of rain on average. There is still a higher risk of storms and hurricanes in October than earlier in the rainy season.

The weather in November finally starts to cool down. There are two National Holidays in November where most of the population will have the day off - All Saints Day on the 1st and Armistice Day on the 11th. Expect celebrations for Saint Martin Day on the 11th, it's also known as the Feast of Saint Martin or Martinmas

Saint Martin in December

December brings the start of the dry season again as well as cooler weather. There are many Christmas events and celebrations for everyone to enjoy throughout the month.
