Easter traditions in the British Virgin Islands

You can tell it’s coming up to Easter in the British Virgin Islands when the annual kite flying processions take place! On Good Friday, look up and witness the colourful haze of kites whistling above you as people of all ages take part in the annual kite festival. Families pack a picnic lunch and head to an open space to join the other 1000 Kites that are estimated to be in the sky throughout the Islands on this special day. Why not join in and feel like a kid again, whether it's a homemade kite or an impressive dragon shaped one, make the most of this fun festival on a gorgeous sunny day on the Islands.

Seafood is a huge part of Easter celebrations in the BVI. Fresh fish and shellfish play a key role in the Easter feast as March and April is the perfect season for them. Local bakeries will also offer special Easter buns curated from the locally sourced spices and dried fruits of the Island, with the recipe being passed down for hundreds of years.

Best places to celebrate Easter in the British Virgin Islands

The island of Virgin Gorda really is the home of the best Easter celebrations and festivities. The wonderful island throws an annual Easter festival, full of Fungi music, dancing to the reggae beats and plenty of entertainment. The 4 day festival ends with a street parade in Spanish Town on the Easter Monday, with the other 4 nights hosting calypso band competitions and beach parties for locals and guests to enjoy.

The famed Spanish Town also hosts the annual deep sea fishing showcase at the same time as the festival. The main event of Wahoo (an indigenous Caribbean fish) fishing tournament brings together the whole community with plenty of catches for you to taste.

Depending what days the Easter weekend fall, make sure to stick around for the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival. Arguably the BVI’s biggest sailing event of the year with over 150 boats taking part in thrilling races, starting in Nanny Cay Marina and zipping through the Sir Francis Drake Channel, followed by amazing victory parties at numerous buzzy Island bars.

Where better to spend Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday than in a stunning Caribbean hotel.
