Great, try to go after Jan if you can

Wengen’s neighbour, if you want to ski under the shadow of the Eiger, and have the same options as Wengen, but prefer a busier nightlife scene, Grindlewald is your bet. They have a decent park. One disadvantage is that in January the resort itself is in the shade the whole time.

Excellent week in Grindelwald

Grindelwald was a bit of a last minute choice but we’d been told it was a pretty and quiet resort. It’s an expensive place but it’s certainly very high quality. It was lovely getting about on the little trains. We did three days of guiding which was just as well because the visibility was low, so it was good to have someone who knew where they were skiing! Fortunately the weather cleared up so we could enjoy the scenery. I’d say there was a good cross section of skiing, I don’t ski off piste but am quite a competent skier. Other than skiing, we also did curling and tobogganing which we booked through the resort rep.

I keep going back!

Grindelwald is a really special place with so much mountaineering history, it’s this really small village surrounded by MASSIVE mountains like the Eiger. If you haven’t been before, definitely go up the Jungfraujoch and have some traditional Swiss food for lunch, like raclette or fondue. There’s a place called Brandigg that’s halfway between Kleine Scheidegg and Grindelwald that does amazing Apple Fritters and Rostis and Grindelwald also has a lovely chocolate shop.
I’m a boarder and brought a friend here to teach her to board. The riding is really varied which is why I like it. The runs are graded by their overall gradient here, so you often find a blue that has lots of flat bits and then suddenly a very steep section. The #21 from Kleine Scheidegg to Brandigg is like this, it starts off as quite a nice blue but the further down you go it becomes really narrow and steep – horrible to snowboard down! There’s a really nice blue from Allmend down to Wengen though. The reds tend to be a lot wider and more pleasant. One place to go to is Männlichen, which is a really nice, open and quiet area with some lovely wide red runs.
It snowed heavily on a few days but the great thing about Grindelwald is that there’s so much else to do, from museums to the climbing wall and swimming. Every time I go there’s always unfinished business and something new to do or see. The trains are really good with true Swiss efficiency. If you use the train, sit on the side away from the Derby hotel (which is right by the station) as you’ll get better views of the Eiger. The trains with green on the carriages take you up the mountain, whereas the ones with blue take you to Interlaken.

First time in Switzerland, won't go back to France!

Reviewed 18 Mar 2014

You can’t beat Switzerland, Grindelwald was the first time I’d skied in Switzerland and now I would never to back to France – best skiing holiday I have had.
I skied all over Grindelwald, Murren and the Jungfrau area. The scenery is incredible of the Eiger, Jungfrau and the Monk.
The skiing was ok, possibly a little bit limiting and not as extensive as France where you have huge areas like the 3 valleys and Espace Killy, so I skied the same slopes a couple of times, but the other parts of the holiday made up for it. There’s plenty of messing about for intermediates and quite a lot of off piste if you like that, but not many challenging blacks if you’re a really good skier.
I had superb snow conditions while I was here in March.
