Not as expected

Reviewed 14 Apr 2016

Our holiday was generally very good but the chalet was quite dilapidated and not quite what I expected from 4 star accommodation.
Inside it was very tired looking and basic and in the room we had, the heating didn’t work at all and it was quite cold. When you have wet stuff that needs to dry overnight after a day’s skiing it’s a bit of a pain as well as being quite uncomfortable. Luckily the chalet host was very helpful and got hold of an electric heater but even then it wasn’t quite warm enough. The room also had a very low roof so although it was quite big, you could only really use one half of it because the rest was too low. It was big enough for the 4 of us but only had one bit of furniture so we had to live out of our suitcases.
The host cooked decent food and we had a good meal in the Petit Ferme on the chalet day off.
The location was fine, not totally ski in ski out but not far off the slopes. The walk down was reasonable, a little too tricky with our 5 year old but fine for grown-ups. You can get on a shuttle bus if you don’t want to walk but even this was a bit of hassle with a young child. At the end of the day you can ski down a narrow icy ramp which shoots off a ski run and takes you back to the chalet. It was marked as blue when we were here and is definitely not a blue – it’s very very steep, goes round a corner and ends quite suddenly - I noticed they’d changed it to a red recently which is definitely more accurate.
If they said it was 2 star and I’d paid half the price I would have been happier.

A high point in Europe's highest resort

Reviewed 22 Jan 2014

Inspiring views greet you from this lofted position above the resort of Val Thorens and make you want to get out there into that epic landscape. And you're in luck because, not only are you a matter of minutes walk from both the piste and town, but both are practically skiable across small off-piste sections (ability dependant of course), just adding to the excitement of staying in such an impressive alpine area. If skiing isn’t yet quite your forte fear not, the bus stops right outside the building making it very easy to get around, especially if you decide to go and explore the après ski side of this purpose-built mountain town (be sure to visit our friends Duncan and Rory at Le Frog and Rosbeef which holds the record as the highest pub in France).
