4 reviews of Chalet Caron in Val Thorens, France.

We were lucky that Val Thorens had had loads of snow the week before, which meant we had some of the best conditions I’ve skied in. We managed to ski the lot, it’s a big area and we explored all of it. There isn’t much to do apart from ski, other than ten pin bowling… I don’t usually like going back to the same place but I would stay here again.

Chalet Caron was brilliant. I was recommended it by a friend who had stayed there the year before, and it was perfect for what we wanted. It was nice to have food all ready when we got in, and the cooking was all good with a variety of different meals. It’s a nice place to relax in if you didn’t want to go skiing one day. The bedrooms weren’t too bad, a little small and we could have done with more storage (but I don’t know where they’d have put it). Luckily we had locker rooms downstairs for our skis and boots. We had a little walk down the hill to get to the slopes, but if there had been loads of snow you might have been able to ski.

The Caron was the perfect size for all of us, we were 3 families in 5 bedrooms and it worked really well. The bedrooms were just big enough, you wouldn’t have wanted them to be any smaller but they were fine. The social areas weren’t bad but perhaps they weren’t ideal - the truth is that they’re starting to get a bit tired and need a revamp. The sofas weren’t very comfortable – just wooden ones with cushions.
The pool area was a bit weird, and the sauna didn’t work which was a shame.
You have to clump down in boots for maybe 6-7 minutes walking downhill, then wait for the bus or ski down a little red bit. Sometimes we went that way and would just slide down with skis but the kids weren’t quite good enough to do it at first. In all, it wasn’t the easiest place to get to.
We all enjoyed the food which was very good. Helen was very accommodating and sorted us out, letting the kids eat earlier. Helen was really great and deserves a medal.

Bring a group and take sole occupancy of this little piece of high altitude heaven, staying in the fourth floor of one of the highest chalet complexes in Europe. Situated within the skiable pisted area, clip in as soon as you leave the chalet if the snow is good enough, making the 220 yard dash along the snow covered road to the piste even quicker, and smoother. If you really feel like you need to save your legs only for the snowboarding or skiing, don’t forget to take the bus service which stops right outside your door, making the journey from bed to piste to bar even shorter!
